Longhorn Cowfish not eating after ich outbreak

Oh no! Sick fish?! Come here and see if someone can help!

Since this board has been up, we have found there are several questions that routinely get asked in order to help diagnose problems. If you can have that information to begin with in your post, we'll be able to help right away (if we can!) without having to wait for you to post the info we need.

1) Your water parameters - pH, Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrates and salinity (if appropriate). This is by far the most important information you can provide! Do not answer this with "Fine" "Perfect" "ok", that tells us nothing. We need hard numbers.

2) Tank size and a list of ALL inhabitants. Include algae eaters, plecos, everything. We need to know what you have and how big the tank is.

3) Feeding, water change schedule and a list of all products you are using or have added to the tank (examples: Cycle, Amquel, salt, etc)

4) What changes you've made in the tank in the last week or so. Sometimes its the little things that make all the difference.

5) How long the aquarium has been set up, and how did you cycle it? If you don't know what cycling is read this: Fishless Cycling Article and familiarize yourself with all the information. Yes. All of it.

We want to help, and providing this information will go a LONG way to getting a diagnosis and hopeful cure that much faster.

While you wait for assistance:
One of the easiest and best ways to help your fish feel better is clean water! If you are already on a regular water change schedule (50% weekly is recommended) a good step to making your fish more comfortable while waiting for diagnosis/suggestions is to do a large water change immediately. Feel free to repeat daily or as often as you can, clean water is always a good thing! Use of Amquel or Prime as a dechlor may help with any ammonia or nitrite issues, and is highly recommended.

Note - if you do not normally do large water changes, doing a sudden, large water change could shock your fish by suddenly changing their established water chemistry. Clean water is still your first goal, so in this case, do several smaller (10%) water changes over the next day or two before starting any large ones.

Longhorn Cowfish not eating after ich outbreak

Post by TheShield »

Hello,

I had an iusse with ich in one of my tanks, tried the two tanks move method with a yellow cowfish, a green cowfish and a yellow boxfish, all of them initially from the same tank. Kept the fish in quarantine for two months, moved yellow cowfish to a different tank, no issues since then. Put the boxfish and the gree cowfish back into the same tank which was left with no fish for more than 2 months, it was supposed that any ich would die. Turned out to be wrong, ich after couple of weeks maybe a month was back on the greencow and boxfish.

Moved the boxfish into a quarantine tank, died less than 12 hours after. Moved the green cowfish into the quarantine tank, not eating since last 48 hours. Checked water and tank, which is basically just RO, salt and a Marina i25 filter plus heater to keep it at 24 degrees. As expected all water parameters are excelent, what else would you expect from a 24 hours prepared RO water and RedSea salt.

I am suspecting some internal parasites besides ich, anyone have experienced anything like this? There was a post on some forum about a cowfish or boxfish not eating and just lying down at the bottom of the aquarium after an ich outbreak but no reply received to the original post.

No chemicals/medicine has been ever added to any aquarium.

Thank you.

All three fish are very prone to Ich and parasites. They are also very fragile and easily upset fish. All the tank moves may have been too much stress for the boxfish. Give them time to settle, darken the aquarium and make sure the temp isn't too high, keep it on the lower side of normal. What are you using to treat the Ich on these guys?

The cowfish died today about 72 hours after moved to quarantine.

The tank moves has been done months ago and its one of the method to cure ich. They have lived after that for another months and then ich returned to them.

I would rather suspect something in their diet (I only feed them brand products) since I have lost 2 small cowfish, a boxfish and a big cowfish in a matter of days, not all of them part of the same aquarium.

Thank for the interest shown althought no real help (not a thought shared) was provided by any member of this forum community.

We don't really have any boxfish experts here. They are in the same order as puffers, but not the same family. I'm sorry for your loss and troubles. I read your post, but it's not something I could have helped you with.

I believe we have4 had long talks about your stocking issues. I told you the stress would eventually kill them & you chose not to listen. I knew this was inevitable. :(
You are getting sleepy... you only hear the sound of my voice... you must do water changes... water changes... water changes... water changes...
