Generally chemicals can be avoided with algae problems. Please post all water parameters
It's amazing how easy maintenance is. If done regularly and thoroughly

BGA is actually not algae, it's a bacteria. Once it starts in a tank it is a devil to get rid of because of the varying conditions it can survive in. Before you revert to chemicals though, try manual removal, multiple daily water changes and then black the tank out for a while (I go 4-5 days) with out feeding your fish either. Completely back the tank out, cover it with blankets so no light can get in. After the black out manually remove the rest. Also, if it it on stuff that is removable without causing damage to the tank, hydrogen peroxide soaks are nice tool to help get rid of it. Make sure you do a good FW rinse after soaking it in peroxide so that you don't get a lot in your tank. If all that fails then you want to look in to something like ChemiClean Red Slime Remover, I've used it with my SW puffers without problem. Is the tank Marine or FW?
