Hi my name is Alex and i live in the uk and as the title suggests im so new to puffers I dont even own any yet :lol:

I currently have a 33 gal (uk) community tropical fish tank up and running and have just bought a 12 gal (us) tank which I would like to keep puffers in as I seen some in my lfs and thought they looked so cool. I asked for some advice on a forum I use a lot "Tropical fish forum" about which puffers would suit a newbie and several people recommened I come here (I can see why after having read the name :)) I intend for it to be a species only tank unless you have any other ideas?

So to the questions, which puffers would be able to fit a 12gal tank and how many?
would you suggest brackish or freshwater to a newbie (puffers)?
what special requirements if any do they have?
and what would be the best possible set up for them (substrate, filtration, plants)

Any advise or comments are much appreciated and thanks in advance

2 dps would be ok in there. Where you from in uk?
Heavily planted and well filtered tank is essential. If you dont want live plants use lots of decor
It's amazing how easy maintenance is. If done regularly and thoroughly

+1 to the dwarf puffers, with only 12 gallons, that is the suitable choice.

Argonite sand is always a good choice to help with water hardness

Isnt arognite only really suited to brackish/marine?

thanks for your replys, im a big fan of using live plants I have a fair few in my other tank so id probably continue to use them with some bog wood and small rocks for decor.
Would the 2 dps have to be different sex?
Oh and im in plymouth, do u know the uk?

oops just seen your in brighton bertie so yeah you know the uk pretty well :lol:

Yea know my way around a bit lol. Wow your 33g is massively stocked. any plans on upgrading? lol so you going with dp's?

Yeah im waiting on a house move so I can get a 5ft in the front room but dont panic alot of my fish are less than 6months old so thier all quite small still, i might hang on then turn the 33gal into a puffer tank as i didnt realise they needed so much room :o

Where abouts you too? Know of any decent lfs around the area? Not sure if you visit Plym a lot but theres a few I regularly use, Maidenhead aquatics on Crownhill road are good as too are Emporer tropicals in Manadon and the shop at the end of Hatt (near Saltash) garden centre. There are a couple others in Plym but didn't rate them to highly.

Well Im definetly going for dps in my tank and Iv got the white sand to go in today :D just working out the general scapping now of bogwood and which plants to go for :? :)

Ill post pics as soon as Iv got 5mins
