I freely admit that I have worked mostly with Olive nerites and one other species that appears with them in orders - but I have no idea what that other is.
I have never seen an olive nerite (or the other species that I have kept) with the foot extending past the shell. They move with all-but-no space between the shell and the glass.
My F-8s behave with these snails exactly as patola_l described. I have never seen any exposed foot, but liveinazoo may have other species which behave differently. I have seen these critters in the Caribean on rocks at low tide either exposed or barely covered and they behave the same as in my tanks. That is the source for the ones I get; his may be from other locations with different selection pressures or may be other species with different behaviors. I have not kept any of the marine-only species.

I acclimated an olive nerite today as an experiment. So far he hadn't noticed it. I hope he continues to ignores it. I'm not wanting to put any kind of crabs in the tank because I'm afraid they might eat Orangjello, and Balki would be devastated.
