Labored Breathing

Oh no! Sick fish?! Come here and see if someone can help!

Read this before posting!!

Since this board has been up, we have found there are several questions that routinely get asked in order to help diagnose problems. If you can have that information to begin with in your post, we'll be able to help right away (if we can!) without having to wait for you to post the info we need.

1) Your water parameters - pH, Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrates and salinity (if appropriate). This is by far the most important information you can provide! Do not answer this with "Fine" "Perfect" "ok", that tells us nothing. We need hard numbers.

2) Tank size and a list of ALL inhabitants. Include algae eaters, plecos, everything. We need to know what you have and how big the tank is.

3) Feeding, water change schedule and a list of all products you are using or have added to the tank (examples: Cycle, Amquel, salt, etc)

4) What changes you've made in the tank in the last week or so. Sometimes its the little things that make all the difference.

5) How long the aquarium has been set up, and how did you cycle it? If you don't know what cycling is read this: Fishless Cycling Article and familiarize yourself with all the information. Yes. All of it.

We want to help, and providing this information will go a LONG way to getting a diagnosis and hopeful cure that much faster.

While you wait for assistance:
One of the easiest and best ways to help your fish feel better is clean water! If you are already on a regular water change schedule (50% weekly is recommended) a good step to making your fish more comfortable while waiting for diagnosis/suggestions is to do a large water change immediately. Feel free to repeat daily or as often as you can, clean water is always a good thing! Use of Amquel or Prime as a dechlor may help with any ammonia or nitrite issues, and is highly recommended.

Note - if you do not normally do large water changes, doing a sudden, large water change could shock your fish by suddenly changing their established water chemistry. Clean water is still your first goal, so in this case, do several smaller (10%) water changes over the next day or two before starting any large ones.

I would let it be, over time it will even out. More than likely you have silica in your tap water, but once the diatoms use the silica to make their shell, that will deplete the silica, and over time the diatoms will run out of their building block. You may find a little after water changes, but they are easy to clean off and harmless.

Without knowing the personality of your puffer, I will just have to go with the suggestion of a single tomato clown if your puffer is not a weenie.

good job getting rid of the ich. as much as it sucks having your puffer get it, it makes you closer having to watch him all the time and between the two of you getting through it. You never really pay quite as much attention to them when they are perfectly healthy, not in the same way.

Thanks Pufferpunk, but I didn't put a name in there. I was informing you as you were the first one helping me and continued all the way through with everyone else. However, if you like, I would be proud to call my GSP PufferPunk.

Can "you" tell me what type of fish will survive with GSP in Saltwater?. Any Ideas?

Why only a single tomato clown fish......I am not sure about the weenie thing....he turns black when he chases his food, but as far as aggressiveness,....I don'k know.....when I clean the tank he comes right up to my fingers all the time.....watches everything I do and I use a net to clean up his poop and he plays as I move the net around. So I don't know if that constitutes "weenie". Why are tomato clownfish aggressive?

GSP's are all so different and moody, they could be fine with a tankmate for years, then nom nom nom. Some are like mine, weenies, he's afraid of certain rocks, he would get bullied. A tomato clown is what I see Pufferpunk suggesting a lot, I suppose they aren't overly aggresive like a maroon clown, but also hardy enough to stick up for themselves if need be.
Single, because as sequential hermaphrodites, 2 will pair up, the larger more mature one assuming the female role. They will guard their territory with deathly valor.

Hi everyone

All is well with my puffer. We have full Marine Salt water and he loves it! I have a rod in the bottom of the tank that makes like a curtain of bubbles and he plays with it. However, I keep getting green algea.......is there something I can put in the water?

How do I get rid of this algea that keeps coming back. I scrub the sides down and I have changed the water yesterday 50% and now today 25%. I changed it this morning, washed the filters, the media and the pump, and here I am 4 hours later and the algea is coming back. What do I do???

Cut back the lights, make sure there is no extra food in the tank. Try adding some snails, I forget what type I just added but it has a triangle shell and is doing a great job cleaning the algae growing in my tank. And its way to big for Bacon to even worry about
