MBU Puffer drifting...

Oh no! Sick fish?! Come here and see if someone can help!

Read this before posting!!

Since this board has been up, we have found there are several questions that routinely get asked in order to help diagnose problems. If you can have that information to begin with in your post, we'll be able to help right away (if we can!) without having to wait for you to post the info we need.

1) Your water parameters - pH, Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrates and salinity (if appropriate). This is by far the most important information you can provide! Do not answer this with "Fine" "Perfect" "ok", that tells us nothing. We need hard numbers.

2) Tank size and a list of ALL inhabitants. Include algae eaters, plecos, everything. We need to know what you have and how big the tank is.

3) Feeding, water change schedule and a list of all products you are using or have added to the tank (examples: Cycle, Amquel, salt, etc)

4) What changes you've made in the tank in the last week or so. Sometimes its the little things that make all the difference.

5) How long the aquarium has been set up, and how did you cycle it? If you don't know what cycling is read this: Fishless Cycling Article and familiarize yourself with all the information. Yes. All of it.

We want to help, and providing this information will go a LONG way to getting a diagnosis and hopeful cure that much faster.

While you wait for assistance:
One of the easiest and best ways to help your fish feel better is clean water! If you are already on a regular water change schedule (50% weekly is recommended) a good step to making your fish more comfortable while waiting for diagnosis/suggestions is to do a large water change immediately. Feel free to repeat daily or as often as you can, clean water is always a good thing! Use of Amquel or Prime as a dechlor may help with any ammonia or nitrite issues, and is highly recommended.

Note - if you do not normally do large water changes, doing a sudden, large water change could shock your fish by suddenly changing their established water chemistry. Clean water is still your first goal, so in this case, do several smaller (10%) water changes over the next day or two before starting any large ones.

I don't believe our brands are going to coincide, our packaging has to show ingredients.
API Aquarium Pharmaceuticals: General Cure
Tetra: Parasite Guard
Jungle: Fizz Tabs Parasite Treatment
Seachem: Metronidazole

Actually these brands look darn familiar. Going to go thru them again.

Thanks for all the help!

Btw, I have not seen his poop on the substrate since abt a week ago.. I used to vaccum them up everyday.. Yesterday I saw orange liquid like poop/pee from his anus.. sort of like peeing... He has been eating small portion of prawn for 3 days now. I cut into small chunks and drop one by one so that I know when he is full..

I have attach some pictures of him.. no, its not a hummingbird. I think he is much happier than before.

That poo your describing is classic internal parasites type poop, mustering and yellowish. I hope you can find the medicine. Remember don't go by the directions, it has to get inside him.

Your puffer if so super cute! Great photography!

mucusy*, not mustering, auto correct got me

I have some pictures of his poop.. sorry I dun mean to be rude.. Just to verify that this is IP.

Btw I have gotten the API General cure. Hooray!! Just need to marinate the food in a bit of that for a while right? Any advice how long should I use it? The instruction says douse in to water too LOL!! and it states nothing about treating IP.. No wonder I missed that...

Btw the PURA NitrateLock is pretty effective.. 3 days without WC and it still kept my no3 below 10.. usually it would have climbed to at least 20 by now..

Yeah, that mucus is typical for IP's.
Ok, you don't want to use too much medicine in your marinade, or they may not eat it. Crush some garlic to add to the mixture to help simulate your fish to eat it. It doesn't take much medicine to work, so if at first he doesn't eat it, try less next batch. Marinate at least 15 min to an hour, but longer than that, they tend to reject the food.
Try his favorite foods to increase the chances he will eat the medicated foods.
I used about maybe an 1/8 tsp in a small amount of tank water, in a small container, like a baby food bottle size, just enough water to cover the food, and about a half clove or whole clove of crushed garlic.

Oh, that's good that product is working, but please keep up the large weekly, if not twice weekly water changes, there are other things that build up in the water we can't test for that are also dangerous, such as growth hormones and so on.
Mbus are very prone to health issues, some leading to death when kept in smaller than optimum tanks. Until you can get him in a bigger tank, your best option is change that water out as often as you possibly can. I'd even suggest doing daily small water changes, if that something you can manage. Keep his water as fresh and clean as possible.

7 days is good, but a water change every 2 weeks is not good. FW puffers in optimally sized tanks need a minimum of 50% water changes every week.
