Temperature for Abei?

Post by Pazuzu »

Hey folks,

What is the ideal temperature range for Abei puffers? I have Pazuzu in a tank w/ no heater and it is sitting between 80-81F. The tank is in a room full of reptiles w/ heat lamps so the ambient temperature is high. According to the PufferPedia, my temperature is at the top of their temperature preference range, does anybody have any other research or anecdotal evidence that would suggest a lower temperature is better?

Thanks,
Rob

74-80F, as you saw when you researched.

I have none of the evidence you asked for, but can tell you that higher temperatures result in less dissolved oxygen in the water, so just make sure your aeration is adequate. I wouldn't otherwise worry about it unless it get much past where you are at. We keep puffers in the mid 80s while treating for ich for extended periods of time without a problem, so just keep an eye on it.

I also don't have an abei. I keep my tanks 76 - 78°, except for my odessa barbs, they run cooler.

Has this been his temp for only the time you're been in your new place? What was it before?

There are a few members with abei puffers, so someone should have some personal experience to share.

Before the new place, he sat between 77-78 with a heater.

The new place I am at is a very old house, built in the 30's. The hardwood floors and solid wood walls insulate heat much better than drywall.

Higher temperatures will cause metabolism to increase which means you'll need to feed more and your water quality will decrease more quickly.
It is absurd to talk of one animal being higher than another. We consider those, when the cerebral structure/intellectual faculties most developed, as highest. A bee doubtless would when the instincts were.
