White swollen lips :(

Since this board has been up, we have found there are several questions that routinely get asked in order to help diagnose problems. If you can have that information to begin with in your post, we'll be able to help right away (if we can!) without having to wait for you to post the info we need.
1) Your water parameters - pH, Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrates and salinity (if appropriate). This is by far the most important information you can provide! Do not answer this with "Fine" "Perfect" "ok", that tells us nothing. We need hard numbers.
2) Tank size and a list of ALL inhabitants. Include algae eaters, plecos, everything. We need to know what you have and how big the tank is.
3) Feeding, water change schedule and a list of all products you are using or have added to the tank (examples: Cycle, Amquel, salt, etc)
4) What changes you've made in the tank in the last week or so. Sometimes its the little things that make all the difference.
5) How long the aquarium has been set up, and how did you cycle it? If you don't know what cycling is read this: Fishless Cycling Article and familiarize yourself with all the information. Yes. All of it.
We want to help, and providing this information will go a LONG way to getting a diagnosis and hopeful cure that much faster.
While you wait for assistance:
One of the easiest and best ways to help your fish feel better is clean water! If you are already on a regular water change schedule (50% weekly is recommended) a good step to making your fish more comfortable while waiting for diagnosis/suggestions is to do a large water change immediately. Feel free to repeat daily or as often as you can, clean water is always a good thing! Use of Amquel or Prime as a dechlor may help with any ammonia or nitrite issues, and is highly recommended.
Note - if you do not normally do large water changes, doing a sudden, large water change could shock your fish by suddenly changing their established water chemistry. Clean water is still your first goal, so in this case, do several smaller (10%) water changes over the next day or two before starting any large ones.

Of course it isn't. Gonna do salt/mela/Pima for now. Gonna drop in an airstone and have my hubby pick up maracyn tomorrow at lunch. I have to work until 7 tomorrow night...I'm gonna hope for the best. Does anyone think this could be columnaris? The future seems pretty grim if it is

I don't think that's what columnaris looks like.
You are getting sleepy... you only hear the sound of my voice... you must do water changes... water changes... water changes... water changes...

Re: White swollen lips :(
There are a few different infections that cause mouth fungus/mouth rot, some caused by bacteria and others by fungus. Columnaris is the most likely, and is difficult to treat, but not impossible, especially if you caught it at the onset.

So I've heard. Should I under dose or dose exactly as it states?Pufferpunk wrote:You must be careful with antibiotics or it will wipe out what little nitrification bacteria you have in there.

If you are using just Maracyn, it will not affect the biofilter. Watch out for other combination antibiotics or medications like what you mentioned before. Underdosing could lead to immunity, so I would follow the directions to a tee.

Re: White swollen lips :(
Forgot to write this just now, but remember to dose for the full time period, which I believe is 5 days. Dosing at the same time every 24 hours helps to avoid over or underdosing as well.

Re: White swollen lips :(
Thanks guys! You just don't understand how much I appreciate all the advice. I'm gonna do a large water change now and dose the tank with what I have on hand. He is swimming all over the place and acting normally in that aspect. Glad I bought it so soon. I will NEVER put another piece of wood in any tank I ever have. Don't know for the fact that it's the wood but this problem is enough to completely turn me off. Thank you again, I truly love and care about my fish...when they are sick it kills me. I'm glad I have somewhere to go where people understand...lol. My real life friends think I'm a nut and could care less

I wouldn't worry about never having driftwood again, although I can understand why you would feel that way after this. Just make sure you always boil or otherwise cook wood when you get it to kill any pathogens.

Re: White swollen lips :(
It was foul smelling! Even the other wood that got this white walrus never smelled bad. I boiled it for two hours then soaked over night...never again. I did an 80% water change and the water is much clearer. Manson is laying in his cave breathing heavily. I added an airstone as well. I am getting up early tomorrow to get to Petco to pick up the meds and start dosing...don't want to wait until lunch. Thanks again.
