Dog faced and masked?
Dog faced and masked?
Hey guys I've set up my 140g system and it houses a lone dog faced puffer, he's my boy I wanted to know if I could put a masked puffer with him? I know dogs are one of the least aggressive and masked are about the same, but I wanted the opinions of the professionals

Re: Dog faced and masked?
Pretty sure he'll feel betrayed that you put an intruder in his tank.
Things he may say while giving you hurtful looks, "How could you do this to me? Am I not good enough for you? Is this my replacement? I thought we had a connection, I thought I made you happy..."
Ok, maybe not. :/
Puffers often don't like a second puffer, or, they may like the second puffer, and treat you like a third wheel. Puffers are more personable when kept as singletons.
Do you have any pics? What's his name?
Also, considering the adult sizes of them, a 140 g may not be proper to house all of their pufferly majesty and epic bioload.

In a 140g, I highly suggest against chancing that they will get along & not harm each other. There are many other fish, however, that would go nicely with him.
You are getting sleepy... you only hear the sound of my voice... you must do water changes... water changes... water changes... water changes...

Umm....eels, frogfish, lion fish, I'd really really love a v-tailed grouper (max size of 10") would the grouper work? There faster then puffers so I'd have to make sure the puffer gets his food

Re: Dog faced and masked?
Eels? I think there is one species that isn't very aggressive, I'll have to look up which one it is, but I think it's the banded moray, Echidna polyzona.
PP I believe has kept a smaller frogfish, I think so anyway, she could advise you on that. They are ridiculously cute, but I know they will eat anything that fits in their mouth, sort of like the african clawed frog. That v-tail grouper tends to be really mean, and it would likely stress out and maybe hurt Lenard.

The only issue will be upgrading to at least a 500 gallon once these guys get to be footballs.

These are juveniles, adults get more aggresive. It's your choice what you keep and how you keep it , but I would never suggest to anyone to keep that many fish in a tank that size, even if you don't consider their adult sizes. The cowfish has a gigantic adult size, and he could kill off everything in the tank if he has a bad moment and releases his toxin.btsherrill77 wrote:I have a reticulated, stars and stripes, fingerprint tobey, porcupine, cow fish, snowflake eel, dogface, all in a 240....no.issues at all.
I do genuinely hope that you have no issues, and that you are prepared to accommodate the space requirements for their adult sizes, but this is not an ideal set up, to say the least, and should not be suggested.
What I'm trying to say is, suggestions and help should be as beneficial as possible so the recipient has as few issues and has the information available to set up an ideal set up. I don't think it's wise to suggest "recipes for disaster". For instance, I'm in the latter stages of setting up a custom 55 gallon for my GSP, but right now, and for the last several months, he's been in a 29 gallon FOWLR, with his "bestie", a lyretailed molly. First off, 29 gallons is not big enough for a GSP alone, but I tried taking the molly out, and he got incredibly upset and paced and panicked for the entire next day. Once I returned the molly to him, he calmed down and resumed his normal behavior. But I would never suggest that someone put a molly in with a GSP because it's way more likely that you'll find pieces of the molly floating around the tank in the morning, than the GSP developing some odd attachment to him. I also know that I could still find molly parts floating around the tank one day. It's also just too small of a tank for both fish. So, I don't suggest this to anyone, because I would feel awful if they had problems because I suggested something that is a "recipe for disaster". Also, these 2 fish have only been living together for a few months, that's hardly enough time to say that it's tried and true and problem free.
Point is, it's everyone's own choice how they keep their fish, but it's just not a good idea to suggest a less than optimal set up, when it has been proven many times over that it is not ideal. It's just not fair to set people up for potential failure.

Re: Dog faced and masked?
Im not trying to tell anyone what they should do...all of these fish have been together for around 7 months....and the cow fish wont realease any toxin until he is dead...I love this site but you all try to scare the walrus out of people when it comes to puffers etc. Im just saying no body really knows any true info when it.comes to nature. The sad reality is that none.of.us should really have these fish because they truley belong in the ocean.

Re: Dog faced and masked?
Hey, I'm definitely not trying to scare the surlaW out of anyone, I'm just pointing out that situations that have been proven to have more of bad outcome than a good outcome shouldn't be suggested. Someone on this site sometime in the beginning of the year or so had someone else on the site say that he could put another type of puffer, (I think it was a ceylon) in with his valentini puffer. So he did that, and the ceylon attacked the valentini almost instantly, and even though he was able to separate them as quickly as he could, the valentini still ended up dying.
I just don't think it's fair to potentially mislead someone into a situation that could end poorly. It's not about "being right" or standing some higher moral ground, I think it's just best to suggest things that have the highest proven rate of success. No one wants to spend money on products they don't need, and no one wants to have unhappy fish, and especially no one wants dead fish, if you pick apart almost any bit of advise given on this site, you will find that even if it appears that the person is taking fear tactics, or it looks like they are being judgmental, it almost always stems from helping the poster avoid those three things I mentioned.
