Thinking of going FOWLR for a Dog face

Post by Goonerman1 »

I have a 600lt Reef set up at the moment that has been running successfully for 3 years and as a former puffer owner (DP's and a Ceylon) I am still in love with the idea of a Puffer for my Marine set up. If I buy a Dog face will I lose ALL my CUC???? and if so what is the alternative to having no CUC?? I know from experience that Puffers are messy eaters and if I have no CUC the water could become polluted very quickly. Also, I do realise that I would need to sacrifice my corals for a Puffer but that's something I am willing to do

Depends on the puffer but in general all your CUC will become Dinner eventually! An alternative to keeping regular CUC I found while keeping Dogface Puffers is to have a Giant Hermit Crab in your tank but eventually even they become prey aswell.
As im sure your aware you cant keep PREDATOR and PREY in the same space for very long before feathers start flying:D.

If you do go down the FOWLR route then I would abandon all hopes to keep any CUC with the puffer as these are its natural prey.

I see your in london so am I, if your looking I have a 4" Ceylon puffer for sale that has been marine for 2 years

I have kept a Ceylon at Marine before. Lovely fish. Any reason for getting rid of it? Mine was okay with corals is yours? What do you feed it on? Where abouts are you and what would you be looking for it?

Well had him for 2 years! He has never had whitespot or any other diseases even when other fish in my tank have had WS he hasnt!!

TBH After having him for 2 years through out that time he has never really matched the other marine fish I have kept and was always bullied by my niger trigger now I have an Emperor Angel he has started chasing him round the tank nippin his tail etc. Ceylon can handle it as he nearly 4.5" long but they just dont get on and would be really nice for me to get some other marine fish that go with the Angelfish and Guineafowl Puffer I have already.

hence why I am selling him / swapping him! I dont keep corals just LiveRock and fish, he feeds on all meaty foods: prawns, mussels, Frozen cubes, loves River shrimp and other stuff too.

I am in central london, I would actually like to swap him for other marine fish! What marine fish do you keep?

I am kind of hijacking this thread sorry goonerman1. Polscotdp you should never feed a puffer all it can eat. You should be feeding it more than just shrimp ( I hope that shrimp is raw with nothing added). Here is a link in our library on feeding.

Fat puffers = shorter life span. Many puffers don't know when to stop eating.
