Nothing is 100% safe when fahakas are involved,, mine took a big chunk out of a massive plec when he was small so if you like the plec I wouldn't
It's amazing how easy maintenance is. If done regularly and thoroughly

It's highly unlikely & rarely possible but there is 1% of fahakas out there they may allow tank mates. Up to you to take the chance & it's death could happen at any time...

I could not keep anything with two of my three Fahakas. One of them did allow small fish to live for some period of time - weeks normally, but not permanently

To get back to the original question; my 220 has washed beach sand for substrate and has 2 FX5s, with the fighting that goes on from time to time sand gets kicked up and sucked in by the filter, both filters work like champs. The sand just gathers on the bottom of the filter and rarely passes through the motor. One of the FX5s is like 5+ years old, whenever they first came out, the other is 2-3 years. The only issues I have had with the FX5 is needing to replace a couple lid fasteners due to over tightening, and I need to get a new purge valve for the older one as well because it is seized.

I use a sand! I love it! Gives it a nice look and it brightens the tank! But once I get my 200gal tank I am going with a mix of white black and maroon sand so his colors will really pop! 
Fahakas are like dogs! They come up to you and say hi! Or they're just looking for food!

If you add prefiter sponges to the filter intakes, it will block the sand from passing through into the filter. You will likely have to rinse the prefilter frequently, but you would not care about bacteria, so a tap water rinse is fine/ This is best done in a bucket to keep sand out of your plumbing.
