Experienced puffer owners????

Post by Srkoe »

This is mostly for people who have kept many different types of puffers. In your experience which type of puffer in you care puffs the most?

For everyone else...have you ever witnessed your puffer puff and how often?

The reason I ask is because my new Turgidus puffs all the time. Someone in my family sees him puff on a daily basis. If puffing more common in the Target species? Before Manson I have only witnessed one of my peas puff during a scuffle with another pea. My Turgidus is defiantly the most aggressive of all my puffs...even more so than my Fahaka...he is such an angry, mean fish! I would be scared if he was able to grow as large as a Fahaka! Is there a relation between aggressiveness and puffing?

OMG! I didn't think you were serious until I scrolled down to see the pictures.

Is he in a place with a lot of foot traffic?
Kind regards,

It looks hilarious...but makes me nervous. No, not really...he's in my bedroom by the door...the door is almost always closed. He won't puff if we are looking. I was laying in bed tonight watching from across the room (he couldn't see me) and he puffed and unpuffed repeatedly. When I went over there he swam to the front when he saw me, unpuffed and stuck his face on the glass and stared at me like nothing happened.

I have seen more F-8s puff than any other puffer, but that is a heavily weighted sample - I have kept more F-8s than all the others combined.

I have seen my fahaka puff once when I had to place him in his new tank. As in catching him and putting him in the new tank!

I've only seen one Fahaka puff (of the 3 I have kept) and that was under exactly the same circumstance as fahucker's post. I was moving the fish from QT to his permanent tank and he puffed when the bag was in the air between tanks.

I kept a fahaka for a few years while it was still quite a juvenile (before succumbing to a tumor or some kind of cystic disease, long story) and I only saw it puff once - the tank lights were not on yet, and daylight was just starting to come into the room in the morning. I could only really see the silhouette of the fish puffing but there was no other obvious change than the ambient light levels. My ceylon jumps after a significant change in light, and usually not immediately but a few minutes after, as though it takes that long to be woken out of sleep or have his eyes adjust.

My Fahaka has puffed only once (that I've seen) and it was just one random morning. Came downstairs, and I was like whaaaat? Oh, he's puffed! He basically deflated once he saw me.

As for my Ceylon... Never. He's an angry/mean fish, but has never puffed (that I've seen) in 5 years.

I had two male DPs get into a scrap once, and one of them puffed. Same one that displayed his keel at the other male all the time.
