Sand Puffer?!

Post by BryanG »

My LFS recently acquired what they say their marine fish supplier called a Sand Puffer. I have not been able to find any info on these guys and I couldn't get a scientific name either. Anybody ever come across one or know where I can find some info on them...very neat looking species.

A picture would be helpful, but I would guess either Congo or Suvatti. Either one is fairly hard to find, so it might be a good idea to snatch it up. :)

Does that mean it is salt water?

It could be in the Fugu family...

ug.php/v/PufferPedia/Marine/T_Ocellatus/

library/puffers-in-focus/takifuguocellatus/

Also do a search on them... not the easiest puffer to keep unfortunately.

Yeah I can try to go grab a picture. Also, it is a saltwater puffer so we can rule out Congo and Suvatti. I will try to grab a picture today.

Being sw I would go with some sort of Takifugu...but I'm FAR from an expert.

I agree with it being a Takifugu. It's still a juvenile, but it looks like a Takifugu pardalis, or Panther Puffer. They grow to about 14" and like to eat algae in addition to the usual things that go "crunch". Cool fish.

It's possible, but the tail color and body pattern are off.
