Hi, Can I just confirm your opinions here as my pet shop is telling me different and I am a bit confused !!!
I have a 6" T Mbu who is happy enough with daily feeding. He seems to want more some days than others and some days he can be a real pig!
I feed him an alternate mixture of mussels, prawn, live shrimp (they live in the tank and he picks them off here and there) cockles in their shells and he eats cat fish wafers and peas every now and then. His absolute favourite is a crab claw from the fish counter which I figure is good for keeping his teeth down but can be a bit messy in the tank so he doesn't get it all the time.
The advise I am after is about feeding schedules. I have read on other replies that small and often seems to be OK but my shop and others are giving me different advise. They are telling me to feed once every couple of weeks and if I am regularly feeding it will kill him.
They say they are opportunistic feeders and have a slow digestive system so regular feeding overloads their system. The advise was to feed once every couple of weeks !!!!!!!!!
My mbu starts tearing the tank décor about come 5pm in the evening and the tank is by our dinner table, If we eat and he doesn't he starts blowing sand and gravel about swimming rapidly up and down the tank sometimes even bangs his teeth against the glass to get attention and of course a bit of food. he is not fat and is certainly happy so am I killing him with kindness or not?
He shares his 6ft x 2'6" x 2'62 aquarium with a plec, three clown loach, a south american puffer and some cardinal tetras. I run two external filters, an internal filter, a large air pump and an internal UV sterilizer. All water parameters are good and I change 30% of the water once a week religiously.

I will carry on as is then but do every other day. Thank you. I have read all the stuff on here about tank size etc and have decided to wait and see how it goes. Whilst it is desirable to give them the biggest space possible practicality also has an issue as well. I did read the post about Mbu's getting caught up in puddles in the dry seasons etc and have decided that if he gets to big I will have to find him a new owner or get a new tank.
I wasn't planning on getting another Mbu (had one some years ago) but this one has been sitting in the pet shop for some three months in a foot square tank with four guoramis. I couldn't resist taking him home as he was obviously not happy. The way I figure it he is better off here for now and he seems to be brightening up. I have had him for about three months myself now.
The funny thing is he doesn't use the tank size he is in now, I think that he has become institutionalised into the small tank. He stays firmly in the corner he chose , he ventures into the middle of the tank and swims about like a nutter as I said before when he wants food, but stays within a small area.
The south american puffer is all over the tank like a bumble bee and so are the clown loach but the Mbu has his corner and sticks to it.
I would and will get a bigger set up if needed but whilst he is happy and settled I see no reason to give him space he doesn't use.
