New member and owner of a GSP

As of today I am now the owner of my first GSP! I have read quite a few articles on the forum and I'm glad to be a part of such a knowledgeable puffer community!

What size tank is he in? What is the salinity of the Water? Any pics?

he is in a 15g temporary tank for a little while until his 29g is properly setup and cycled. he is in freshwater because he was being kept in a freshwater tank at the lfs and I will be acclimating him to brackish.

Thanks, he is doing well so far and has spent alot of time on the right side of the tank. At first I didn't think it was possible he could see into my S.A cichlid tank next to his about 4 feet away, but when I came back to check on him 30 min later all my cichlids were on the left side of their tank looking in on him... pretty funny. I guess I'll put up a some kind of block so they can't see each other and go about their lives. Just goes to show how clever these little guys are!

I just have one question however, what types of snails should I try to find at the fish stores for the gsp to eat? At first glance all I see being sold is black mystery snails which look way to big and tough for my 1.5'' gsp to take down.

You want pond or plant snails and ramshorn snails. Usually you can get them for free. Here in Ohio Petsmart did away with doing this however, and Jack's typically sells them for 30 cents each. Or I get mine from a friend of mine who thinks snails are pests. I also have a tank specifically to breed snails for my puffer. Lots of possibilities.

Those little pest snails, you usually get them free. Ramshorns are good too.

Ok thanks for the suggestions, I'll be out today looking for some ramshorn, pond, and pest snails. Yesterday I was at a pet store that was having a pest snail issue and I asked for some and he said that they couldn't give them to me because he didn't want my tank to become infested and come back to the pet store blaming them and get him in trouble... But I'll go hunting again and see what I can find.

Just rained here in AZ...actually scratch that a massive down pour snails all over our yard...its rock would it be safe to feed a Fahaka those? Or would it be better just to go to my local petstore and get em?

I have some ramshorn snails that have I had shipped from ebay about 2 weeks ago and they began breeding almost immediately in my tank. I could send you the guys information if you wanted to get some snails from him and set up a snail tank, or I could probably ship you about 10 of my snails and they would probably do well in your 15 gallon once you move the puffer to your 29 gallon.

As long as your yard is pesticide free, worms, snails, whatever is fine.

thanks! that's really nice of you to offer your ramshorns, I actually went out searching today and found a lfs that gave me about 20 little pest snails and couldn't help myself from buying another cichlid for my cichlid tank, but those pests will work for now but once those run out ill be looking for more. So if you would like to give me the guys info I could order from him or pay you if your looking to sell some of yours. Either way works for me, Thanks again!

If you can upgrade to larger than a 29g, I'd do that: library/puffers-in-focus/an-introductio ... d-puffers/

Ya i'd like to eventually but I got a really good deal on the 29g setup with LED lighting so I took it, but in the future ill look into getting him something even bigger for sure.
