All my LFS don't really tell me much about puffers because most of them do not know much about them.
The employees have to identify them as stated on the supplier's fish list, so I never question them about puffer identity.

I just ask what they feed the puffer and how long it has been sitting on the shelf.
Kind regards,
Terrance

Selling bettas for fighting them is no different than selling GF as feeders. I turned them into the Dep of Ag. they still have the sign over their register, 13 years later: 1 betta/ customer.

I was told to cycle a tank the water only had to be in said tank for 48 hrs then it would be fully cycled and ready to stock. I was also told over the weekend you should NOT do partials on nano reef tanks because it takes the nitrifying bacteria out of your water column where it thrives.

I have created a monster!

Mea culpa!

I do enjoy baiting LFS employees who do not know me. But that too is a cruel sport.

My lfs used net transfer for peas. They said that aquarium salt brings up sg. My girlfriend also picked up some corys and ghost shirmp and the nimrod dropped one on the floor.
The staff always seems to be stoned too. They even have Pink Floyd playing whenever we go in.

I was told "You could go home right now and set up your other tank and itll be cycled fully by tonight." This same guy also told me he was getting an alligator from a friend of his in Florida that breeds his own...

But aquarium salt will increase the specific gravity. Specific gravity is a density measure. It in no way analyses the mineral content. Anything which dissolves in water increases the specific gravity. It just is not the right thing to make BW or SW. It just produces salted FW - a brine if you wish, but not BW or SW. Most home/hobby hydrometers will not read the density changes from small salt additions, but if you have a refractometer or even a TDS meter you can certainly read the addition.

That is not the point - mere s.g. or dissolved salt (sodium chloride content alone does not make BW or SW. The dissolved minerals must match the total mineral profile of SW mixes or of natural SW, That is the point.

If you dissolve sodium chloride up to specific gravity of 1.021-1.026 you will not have SW, you will have high density salted FW, a brine. Brackish to marine organisms placed in such water will die.

Sodium Chloride is the largest single mineral contributing to SW, but it is the first among dozens of dissolved minerals (in marine mixes) or many hundreds in natural SW. SW has massive complexity and represents all of the at all soluble minerals in the earth's crust. And yes, it does include gold, but it would cost you more than it is worth to extract it.
