Puffer Induced Exhaustion

I have a thirty gallon tank that I've kept for three months. Two green spotted puffers inhabit it, and no other tankmates have survived. The tank sucks, to put it plainly. Decorating is impossible, as they bite, the sand clouds at the slightest wave, algae grows rampant, with no snails to control it. The weekly maintenance takes hours, cleaning every single rock, brushing the sand caked filter, and avoiding nipping.

I frankly do not want this tank anymore.

I care about the well being of these fish however. Seeing them die at the lfs is simply not an option. I have considered acclimating the to freshwater, then dumping them in a local pond. (Yeah bite me, they won't change jack)

I want to turn this tank into a larger version of my nano reef.

Excuse me?

For one thing, it's illegal. For another, they won't survive. For another, there is a VERY good chance that they will introduce unfamiliar pathogens to your area that could wipe out entire populations. Lastly, introducing a new predator is dangerous. This is a bad idea in every way, shape, and form.

Whoa!!!!!!! Why not buy a bigger tank that they will be happy in (not to mention a more suitable home!!!) and reap the benefits? Think hard

First of all climatising them to FW then dumping them in the river is probs worse than taking them back to the LFS. Why because GSP are not FW fish they are brackish to marine fish so they must be kept in salt water. Also in the River GSPs will die anyway because that is not their natural habitat! So DONT DO That as it sounds like your flustered so dont get flustered and chill for a min.

I think youll find though that the tank you have for them is hard maintain because it is overstocked, 1 GSP need 55Gallons so two of them in 30 Gallons means all kinda problems for you in maintaining water quality, health and happiness of the fish and general maintenance! You should look to either upgrade your tank to a 110 Gallon which is the required volume for 2 GSPs, or take 1 back and upgrade to a 55 Gallon or dont keep ANY at all.

You should also do some reading in the library on how to Properly Care for GSPs as it sounds like you just bought without researching before hand!

You could just take one back to the LFS as the minimum for 1 gps in a tank is 30g. Or upgrade them both to a 55g

Minimum requirement for an adult GSP is 30g ea but they would prefer to be in a 55g.
