Hi Guys, Percy (abei Puff) is so much better since people gave me great advice in the hospital section. His water parameters are back to normal and he just had his dinner!
Yeah I did wonder about that but so far he seems to be liking it, if it doesnt work out I can always get him another one and put something different in the biorb but he seems really happy at the moment he spends his time exploring his cave and hunting not climbing the walls at all. its the 60 biggest one you can get and the space width and depth wise is actually quite deceiving
It's 52.4cm high, just over 50cm wide depth 30cm - he loves his cave in the bottom right and goes in there after his food. He also uses all the space and swims around the bubble tube, the bubbles fascinate him - Im going to get him some tall plants (plastic) so that he can have some more things to explore in the top half of the tank and Im also planning on putting a bigger piece of rock in to create bigger caves
The water volume is about 20 US gallons, no? That's too small for permanent use anyway. He'd probably appreciate a tank with more swim room and enough water for him to stay healthy. Besides, undergravel filters don't really do the trick for puffer tanks - you want the waste to get sucked into a filter with washable or replaceable media. It's very hard to get an undergravel filter vacuumed well, in my experience.
You could get a used tank on the cheap from classified ads or a local pet store, and then you can turn that impressive biOrb into a display with smaller, showier fish.
"I will give you a talisman. Whenever you are in doubt, or when the self becomes too much with you, apply the following test. Recall the face of the poorest and the weakest man whom you may have seen, and ask yourself, if the step you contemplate is going to be of any use to him or her. Will she gain anything by it? Will it restore her to a control over her own life and destiny? In other words, will it lead to freedom for the hungry and spiritually starving millions? Then you will find your doubts and your self melt away."
Ok will do - he seems happy for now though even if it is just temporary I was told by the puffer expert at the pet store who really seemed to know his stuff and he said he wont grow any bigger and I was recommended a tank smaller than the biorb he's in now! to be honest I thought I was giving him extra room with that tank! *sigh* the under gravel filter is easily cleanable (its in the design) but I do have a stingray system too so I'll put that in. Is he going to grow bigger then? I was told he's pretty much full size...I want him to be happy so I'll upgrade if needed
Whoa ugf. Not ideal. Grab a nice size used tank, cycle it and move as soon as you can. Fish are easily stunted, and he is sooooo pretty. You will get much more out of caring for this cool puff in a more appropriate setup, Lfs advice is generally poo so don't listen.
It's amazing how easy maintenance is. If done regularly and thoroughly

Oh what a pain! I know pets at home are rubbish I learnt that from my water advcie! but this guy seemed like a genuinely knowledgable guy, he reamed off loads of information about abei puffers and said he'd be happy in a smaller tankt than the one I have even...I spent ages listening to him because they stock so many puffers and he seemed to know about each and every one of them and said an abei was most suited to me and my tank - apparently they are a specialist store... I do have a 4 foot jewel in my garrage though...
