And if I am removing a minimum of 50% during a w/c everyday doesn't that remove 50% of the bacteria that I am trying to establish? Or is that coming from a build up in the filter? and in that case do I not change the filters? Thanks for all your help, I have no problem doing 50% w/c everyday for the next two months if that is what it takes, just trying to do what I can and do it correctly.

Bacteria doesn't grow in the water column it is found in the saturates, filter and on decor and plants. You won’t have to do water changes daily for two months, just till you get more stable readings. Do you have anywhere to get used filter media from a healthy tank?

+1 to above and in answer to your question, yes the bacteria build up in your filter so if you wish to change it, the media should be switched into the new filter.

Thanks for all the help and sorry for a late replies, I have been busy trying to keep up with life and the puffers, lol. So should I change out the filter media every month like they say or is there a better interval?

I will check at my local store and see if they have any extra used filter medias that I may have.

do not change the filter media monthly.

The biofiltration portion can be rinsed out in tank water and the sponge can be replaced once every few. These thing do break down with time, but monthly is rather quick.

Great thanks for the info, one other thing seems to be happening. One of my puffers has developed what looks like a white, hazy film over the skin??? Any idea on what it is and how to treat it?
