Ok, so I've had this puffer for about a year now, and he has grown exponentially and I can only assume is healthy. Never had a single problem with him, whether its his behavior, eating, etc.
But anyways, ever since the first day I got him, it seems like his spot pattern continues down onto his belly. When he brightens up, you can't see it, but when he just wakes up you can see the spots, only reversed to where his spots are white and the top of his belly is gray.
I guess it also doesn't help with his color to have his tank covered in black sand. He tends to be much darker than when there used to be white sand.

Happens with some GSPs. P. 61 in the aqualog puffer book shows a similar puffer. Possibly GSPs are more than one species or subspecies (or regional variation).

Huge +1 to Corvus's remarks.
I will be shocked if GSPs go through a good analysis and end up with just one species without subspecies or regional variants.
It may all just be just regional variation, but if the splitter do the study it will a riot.
