muffinman why don't you tell us a little about your tank and what type of puffer. That way we will get a better idea on how to answer your questions.

I am getting a GSP, i have a 20 gallon tank for him/her for right now.

I also have a 30 gallon freshwater tank that have 3 sharks, 3 cory cat fish, 2 guppies, 2 baby guppies, and 2 dwarf puffers. Yes i know that dwarf puffers are not community fish i really have not seen them go after a fish.

i would make the 20g into a dp tank, the current setup will end in tears. Which sharks do you own? Also 20g not big enough long term for a gsp
It's amazing how easy maintenance is. If done regularly and thoroughly

GSPs are not freshwater fish, so plants won't survive. Your tank is not big enough anyway.

I agree that it would be a very good idea to move your DPs.
"I will give you a talisman. Whenever you are in doubt, or when the self becomes too much with you, apply the following test. Recall the face of the poorest and the weakest man whom you may have seen, and ask yourself, if the step you contemplate is going to be of any use to him or her. Will she gain anything by it? Will it restore her to a control over her own life and destiny? In other words, will it lead to freedom for the hungry and spiritually starving millions? Then you will find your doubts and your self melt away."

I know that GSP are not fresh water and i know that they need a bigger tank but they will be fine when they are little i just need to do constant water changes. I am only going to have one in the tank so he/she will be fine till i can upgrade the tank size.

My dwarf puffer show no signs of aggression and when they do i will separate them for my other fresh water fish.

Just who said that a BW to SW GSP would be fine in a 20? It will not. It is or should be growing fast and if it has insufficient room for exercise. it is more likely to be obese and to be stunted. Neither is "fine" for a puffer.

The 20 - without the other FW fish of course - will do for a quarantine tank for a month or a bit more while you get a larger tank ready for the GSPs home.

Constant water change may help with the pollution level, but they are not giving room for exercise.

Depends if they are in an ideal setup. If not it will take much longer and probably stunt him

What is the ideal setup?

Since green spotted puffers are so active and have a tendency to pace when they are bored, it's best to get a tank at least 5x his adult length, but this is just a minimum. Ideally the 4 foot tanks are better so they have a good stretch to swim in spurts and whatnot, but of course bigger is fine too if you have the room and money.

+1 to sevenyear. Bigger is better. 29g min but that needs to be long tank. If you can give a 55 gallon long then you will not regret it. When they are happy they give you so much more satisfaction IMHO
