Going from low-end Brackish to full marine

Post by jjj5311 »

Just wondering what type of filter/skimmer I should get for when i get to full marine. I can not do a sump/overflow system so i think i will need a hob skimmer.

Is there a system that is better/cheaper than doing a hob skimmer/filter. I found a cheap surface skimmer here. http://www.fosterandsmithaquatics.com/p ... atid=16729

Does anyone have any experience with these?

The tank i am going to go full marine with is a 29 gallon high tank and I will eventually be putting in live rock. For the Live rock what is the lowest salinity i can start to introduce LR into the tank?

Hey, you're going to want to get some live rock first, you will need to introduce the sw bacteria and beneficial critters.

That's not the right kind of skimmer. Focus on getting some liverock first, honestly you don't *need* a skimmer, most skimmers will be overkill for 29 gallons.
You can add liverock at 1.020

That is not a protein skimmer. I'm happy with the Backpac, for smaller systems.

From what I understand on a tank that small once you got full marine, add live rock and something to move the water around, ie a old HOB filter empty, or a powerhead, and thats all the filtration you will need. And then you can do 25% or so once a month.

But dont take my word for that, as I have only read not done

+1 to xray, except I personally do weekly water changes, 10%-25%.

Once you see the smelly, gross crap a protein skimmer pulls out, you'll wonder how anything lived in there!

Unless he's planning on curing it in a seperate container. It needs to at least be quarantined.

IMHO a 29 with LR is no longer big enough for a GSP, if it ever was.

IME, a small polluted tank needs a skimmer every bit as much as a larger polluted tank. especially if the water volume is markedly reduced by sufficient LR in the display.

FWIW, YMMV.
