Tap water has ammonia

Okay,

So what do you do when your tap water already has ammonia in it?

Mine does, I just add Prime. But the marine tanks get RO/DI

Yep, the bio filter, if established, will knock out the ammonia pretty quickly, and the Prime will make it so your fish are protected for 24 - 48 hours, which is plenty of time for the bacteria to oxidize it.

So does mine. It also has a specific gravity of 1.005, which is why I don't drink the crap. Would be perfect for Figure 8 puffers though, come to think of it... hrmm. Anyway, a dash of Prime or Amquel will work for you. My tap water is also high in silicates so I usually just use RO water instead; my tank doesn't need the diatom explosion nor do I need the headache it brings.

From hearing all these complaints about tap water, I'm beginning to really like the fact that we're still on well water. We have no chlorine or ammonia or other nasties in our water. Not to say it's all roses though. During the winter time, our SG skyrockets because we get all the runoff from the roads and all the rock salt they put on the road.

I think I'd use the Amquel.

I use Prime to detox the 1ppm ammonia in my tap water.

I prefer Prime to Amquel - the latter has not been the original formulation in many years.

Amquel was the original good neutralizer for chloramine treated water. Prime came out later, but IMHO & IME is far superior. Among other things, it does not mess up your water chemistry, which some Amquel formulations are notorious for doing with certain water supplies.
