Labored Breathing

Since this board has been up, we have found there are several questions that routinely get asked in order to help diagnose problems. If you can have that information to begin with in your post, we'll be able to help right away (if we can!) without having to wait for you to post the info we need.
1) Your water parameters - pH, Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrates and salinity (if appropriate). This is by far the most important information you can provide! Do not answer this with "Fine" "Perfect" "ok", that tells us nothing. We need hard numbers.
2) Tank size and a list of ALL inhabitants. Include algae eaters, plecos, everything. We need to know what you have and how big the tank is.
3) Feeding, water change schedule and a list of all products you are using or have added to the tank (examples: Cycle, Amquel, salt, etc)
4) What changes you've made in the tank in the last week or so. Sometimes its the little things that make all the difference.
5) How long the aquarium has been set up, and how did you cycle it? If you don't know what cycling is read this: Fishless Cycling Article and familiarize yourself with all the information. Yes. All of it.
We want to help, and providing this information will go a LONG way to getting a diagnosis and hopeful cure that much faster.
While you wait for assistance:
One of the easiest and best ways to help your fish feel better is clean water! If you are already on a regular water change schedule (50% weekly is recommended) a good step to making your fish more comfortable while waiting for diagnosis/suggestions is to do a large water change immediately. Feel free to repeat daily or as often as you can, clean water is always a good thing! Use of Amquel or Prime as a dechlor may help with any ammonia or nitrite issues, and is highly recommended.
Note - if you do not normally do large water changes, doing a sudden, large water change could shock your fish by suddenly changing their established water chemistry. Clean water is still your first goal, so in this case, do several smaller (10%) water changes over the next day or two before starting any large ones.

Re: Labored Breathing
Prime does help detoxify some toxins to a point but nothing beats water changes. Yes, you need to test for nitrite too. Is there a store still open you can get a test at? What about nay improvement from your last WC? Anything?
You are getting sleepy... you only hear the sound of my voice... you must do water changes... water changes... water changes... water changes...

Re: Labored Breathing
I changed the water yesterday. He seemed a bit better, after 50% change. But still went to corner of tank, not greeting me like normal. Not eating snails yesterday and the snails are all over today and still not eating. Turns really black when he sits on bottom of tank. He goes up and down the corner of the tank. He also sits on the leaves of the bushes. I will see if Pet Supermarket ha a NITRITE test kit

Re: Labored Breathing
Unless there is something rotting somewhere in your tank, I think you shouldn't be having parameter problems in a 45 g tank with a single juvie GSP in there.

Re: Labored Breathing
Since we last spoke, all was well in the 45 gallon. I had not changed to brackish because I wasn't sure how much to chane at a time. All Fish Emporium has Marine salt water already mixed. I wasn't sure if I could use that and how much at a time.
Since Tuesday, things changed, not sure why, I was feeding snails every other day. My nitrates spiked and ammonia was 2.5. So I did a water change 25% on Tuesday, then 25% wednesday, 25% thursday, each time putting Prime in the tank. Friday, I tested in the morning, till not right. Ammonia at 2.5 and Nitrate at 2.0. Chaged 50% water. Little GSP was doing ok, but still turning black. Not eating much. Went to PS and purchased a pump and put extra bubbles so to spea in tank (Airstones-2) and also got another tank filter.
This morning Nitrates 0 and Ammonia 0 but don't know why my little guy is looking black, sitting on the bottom, sometmes in the bush, but not chasing sails or greetng me. He just doesn't have that bright yellow.

Re: Labored Breathing
What other foods have you been feeding him? Are you cleaning the substrate? How about under all the decor/plants?

Re: Labored Breathing
I clean all of the decor, clean all of the plants, move all of the substrate (Move it up when vaccuuming). Everything including glass is clean. I do see that on the sand, I get brown residue and I constantly clean it. I clean under all of the plants and decor.
I feed him snails, I feed him bloodworms, brine shrimp. They come in cubes, I cut the cubes in half, put water from the tank in a cup and let it sit in the cup so that erthing is loose and not frozen. Then I give it to him.

Re: Labored Breathing
I cannot find where it says how much to change the water at a time to brackish,
Can I use the marine Water from All Fish Emporium?
How much do I put in at a time?
Are the test strips at Pet Supermarket ok to use, they don't have a NITRITE test kit
I just don't know what it is that I am not doing?????????

Re: Labored Breathing
For future reference (not that has anything to do with your problem now), rinse the food off in a brine shrimp net so you don't add the "juice" they are in, to your tank. I'd do a 50% WC, just to be safe. He doesn't look really bad though.

He turns really black when he is on the bottom of the tank and he has been staying in the corners or he is hiding in the plants. He is not eating. That's what worries me.

Re: Labored Breathing
Test strips are not very accurate but if that's all you have... You'd have to do the math for the water you have. Maybe Dad's BW mixing article would help?
