Live sand is bagged live, but the bacteria and pods cannot live long in such conditions. So it's a bag of water and sand, that water contributes greatly to the weight, less sand for more money, and dead critters = ammonia.
Buying aragonite sand dry, you get more sand, and then you can seed that sand with cured live rock, no ridiculously cloudy water and ammonia bloom.

No worries brotha.. It makes perfect sense, maybe I'll go that route. What is your take on the filters? You think they will do the job? I've heard good things about live sand, and you're the first person to tell me something negative. Wouldn't mind getting you're input f it's not too much trouble...

My guess is that the people who have monetary gain are advocating live sand, I "try" to help people save money, save unnecessary steps/stress.
For marine, if you want a HOB style, go with aquaclear. However, with sufficient liverock (1.5 - 2 lbs per gallon, cured) you will just need a good flow rate. You can get a couple circulation pumps, make sure they flow around your liverock.

PP always suggests bakpak (sp?) skimmers, they are HOB style.
I couldn't find them in my allotted budget, I'm taking a chance on a Boyu skimmer, but I don't have feedback on it yet, it's not set up.
I'm kind of in the same situation as you, I have my little GSP in a 29, but it's already FOWLR, but I'm also setting up his new home. It's a metaframe custom built tank, 40 x 16 x 20

Sick, I like the way you think.. I was told about the Aqua Clears before, but kind of wrote them off because they're PetCo brand. I have read some reviews and they seem to be legit, but I have also heard a lot of good things about the Emperor as well. I also looked up the Bak Pak skimmer, and the reviews were nothing short of epic, so it looks like im going to be getting that brand skimmer. So with some live rock, only like 7-8 lbs, just something for extra filtration and something for the puff to nibble on. Two 110 Aqua Clears and the Dual Bak Pak skimmer with one power head near the bottom. Is there any such thing as too much filtration?

And I have some other questions.. I'm really amped on watching my puff eat live food. I've given him 2 gut loaded ghost shrimp, one he ate on spot, the other survived 2 days and he finally got him this morning. Are there any feeder fish that are ok and somewhat healthy for him? Like guppys or mollies? I'de rather want something other than a mollie cause they are rather big and can cause a lot of waste. Another thing, NOWHERE around me sells and ramshorn snails, would red claw crabs be ok? They aren't too dangerous for the puff are they?

I bet you and the puff are amping for the new spot!

No feeder fish, they're not considered piscavores, fish is too fatty for them. You can feed them live crabs, craw dads, shrimp, but it's best to quarantine them and guy load them with healthy food first. You can remove the claws if you're worried about injury.

Petco doesn't make Aquaclear though, they are their own well established brand. Very well built, quiet.

Emperors are really noisy and the biowheels tend to splatter salt everywhere.

Ok, yeah I spent some time reading up on a QT tank, def gonna set one of those up. But I was wondering, since my puff will be slowly going to SW, what will happen to the ghost shrimp and crabs and others that are in freshwater?? Won't the salt kill them? I must have been miss informed about Aquaclear, but that is what this forum is for lol.

But I bought my stand last night, gonna slowly assemble it throughout the day, I'll put up pictures when I'm finished. My puff is finally getting super comfy with the tank he's hiding out in the tree stump I have in there. Probably because he found the last ghost shrimp that got away when I put 2 in the tank lol, but either way after swimming for awhile he'll chill in there like the little helicopter fish he is.

live sand often isnt live, its ammonia producing gunk. from my understanding live rock will seed sand and turn it live anyhows

I've read all about the Ramshorn snails, and how to breed them in their own tank. But what happens when the salinity of the water in my tank goes up? Won't the snails freak out and die super quick? Cause freshwater snails and salt don't mix from what I understand... My SG is at 1.004 right now and it's going to be raised again on Monday when I do a water change.

youd have to get a seperate tank for the snails... any of those small ones sold at walmart will work fine or you could get one of those "critter keepers" just make sure you use something with a lid because they will crawl out and it also helps against evaporation

Oh walrus, thanks for the look up! But I do have some questions about the equipment I'm about to order online. My tank is 80gal, and I want to use 2 Aquaclear 110's (500GPH ea.), Dual Bak Pak 2 Protien skimmer, And 2 Aquaclear 50 powerheads with some live rock. Is that overkill for just one GSp? Or the more filtration the merrier?

But what would happen when the snails are dropped in my puffers tank where the salinity is higher? Are they ok to feed to a puff in SW?
