Re: BAD BLOODWORMS
sorry didnt really explain, using ammonia to cycle as per the fishless cycle yes. using dead bottled crap no. i would not put that near my tanks.. i multifilter all my tanks so have plenty of cycled media to start up new tanks ( sorry to add irrelevantish info) i was just voicing my opinion on what the lfs will sell you to instantly cycle-99% of which is junk. i apologise for confusing things on this thread
It's amazing how easy maintenance is. If done regularly and thoroughly

It would have been much easier if you had just added the detail I accidentally missed.eieio wrote:why?CyberBob wrote: but you will still want to wait a week before adding any fish. I'd wait 2 weeks for puffers to be on the safe side.
i'd like to see you substantiate this!
care to?
doubt you can..........
i don't see anything in the Foster & Smith Aquatics website instructions or information that indicates this.........
possibly, waiting a week or two, even if this product does contain live bacteria (which i seriously doubt), just might starve the bacteria into dying off before the fish are added, thus jeopardizing the health of the fish.
was this just your opinion, or did i miss something?

I dunno why you don't like me, but let's try to help people asking for help, ok?
The rants are not needed. If I missed something or even gave wrong info, just correct me and move on.
I did mess up on this post, but there is no need to try and berate me.
I should have said any important fish, not any fish. that was my fault.
I knew what I meant, but I can't expect you to read my mind.
Yes, they would need to eat. Just don't try to cycle your tank with fish you care about. Danios are a good choice, they are very hardy.

I should note that the best way to cycle fast is to add media from a fully cycled tank.
Not sure if this has been said, but that's an almost instant cycle there

Bio-Spira is the only one I completely trust so far.Pufferpunk wrote:Does not in any way contains live bacteria:
Bacteria and enzyme conditioner helps establish biological filtration in new aquariums
* Helps neutralize increased ammonia in aquarium when you add new fish
* Conditions your aquarium water and feeds the nitrogen cycle
But, I don't mind trying new things when starting new tanks.
What about special blend? i've heard good things about them also.
I just bought the F&S colonize to help cycle my new tank. Good to know that it's just a cycle feeder. I thought it had live bacteria also.
I'll prolly just end up taking some media out of my other tank and adding the colonize to jumpstart it.
I plan to only add some snails for the 1st couple of weeks.

you didn't ask for help, you gave bad advice (again)
cycling with live fish is cruel, inefficient and unnecessaryCyberBob wrote:I should have said any important fish, not any fish. that was my fault.

if you knew that media from an cycled tank is the best & fastest way, why would you even mention using live fish?

Re: BAD BLOODWORMS
No one that has been posting on this site for any amount of time would try this. There is absolutely no reason to use "test fish", to see if your tanks are cycled or not. Their gills, eyes, skin burn just like the fish you plan on keeping in there long-term. Every life is valuable! So, most people will throw in some danios or snails or sumtin.
Probably because it's just more bottled dead bacteria.I tried Cycle, didn't like it personally

I agree actually. But, I have used danios before also.Pufferpunk wrote:No one that has been posting on this site for any amount of time would try this. PP is right, every life is valuable.
disregard all the bs ... just use some media from a cycled tank and forget all the other options.
if you absolutely can't find any media from a cycled tank, then i would suggest bio-spira and snails.
I have never tried a fishless cycle personally, but here is what most folks here would recommend:
library/water-filtration/fishless-cycling/
anyways, the important question is ... how is the tank doing?
don't be scared of keeping puffers. they can be more sensitive then other fish, but as long as you research 1st, everything should be OK.
You're not a bad fish mommy, you obviously care greatly for your fish. You have just been given bad info most likely.

Re: BAD BLOODWORMS
Just using some media from an established tank, may not hold enough bacteria to support the bioload of a puffer. If you read the cycling articles, that is only the 1st step of the process. Then you must feed the bacteria with ammonia, to get it to multiply to amounts that can support a large bioload. I do not believe there would be enough snails to produce this much ammonia.

Re: BAD BLOODWORMS
I was one of the folks who popularized fishless cycling, way back when for most of the folks on-line now. I certainly do not need it, I have dozens of mature biofilters. But many novice fish-keepers have no established and mature disease-free tanks. Or have destroyed their biofilter with antibiotics. Fishless cycling was intended for them. Ditto the original BioSpira (it changed quite a bit over time) was the first of the available products which actually worked. Now there are others - and not all of them are any good. some are, some are not. The only one currently available I have tested myself is Dr. Tims' - it does work just fine,
But I do wonder why we still have to spend so much time and space correcting a troll's errors on the forums?

Ok, I'm guessing troll is some slang term in the forums that I'm not familiar with. Could someone please inform me?RTR wrote:I was one of the folks who popularized fishless cycling, way back when for most of the folks on-line now. I actually throught you were calling me a troll (the kind that lives under a bridge). But, now I'm thinking that's not the case.
