i think if it 30 gal or 1000 gal live rock is a good idea but the pros will correct me soon if i am wrong
It's amazing how easy maintenance is. If done regularly and thoroughly

I am not one of those experts, but to my understanding the reason why you dont want a gsp in a 30g with liverock is because even a little bit of liverock takes away a lot of the volume of water that the tank can hold. Making the tank hold less water means that there is less water for the gsp to swim around in and to dilute its waste.

Re: New member proud GSP owner :)
does the live rock not aid that? if a sump is indeed part of the system the l/r could go in there i could be wrong. i am not disputing what you say puffykid you may know more about l/r than me ( marine and l/r novice) but even in a small s/w tank l/r isbeneficial is it not?

yeah, space was the issue i had with it. and yes you could add l\r to a sump.bertie 83 wrote:does the live rock not aid that? if a sump is indeed part of the system the l/r could go in there i could be wrong. i am not disputing what you say puffykid you may know more about l/r than me ( marine and l/r novice) but even in a small s/w tank l/r isbeneficial is it not?
I've done it before when I kept a 55g sw tank. I had a lil coral in the tank, but kept most l\r in the sump.
it works about the same as if it were in the tank.
but, if no sump, i would at least use live sand. just my opinion.

Liverock essentially is your filter for saltwater. It would be madness to set up a saltwater tank without liverock. It houses among many beneficial organisms, the groups of sw nitrifying bacteria.
When you suggest someone to set up a sw tank without liverock because you feel it's taking up room, that's like telling someone not to put a filter on small freshwater tank lest it just take up too much room.
Please, this has already been suggested before, do not advise people on things you know nothing about, or worse, you know the wrong thing about it. If you don't know, and you're not sure, then don't advise!

You must have missed the part about keeping it in your sump if no room for it in the tank?sevenyearnight wrote:Liverock essentially is your filter for saltwater. You really need to stop trying to show me up. It's really getting old folks.
I do know what I'm talking about believe it or not.

Re: New member proud GSP owner :)
You said if using a sump, as if there is an option to set it up completely without liverock. I'm not just trying to show you up sir, I'm trying to make sure people get accurate and beneficial advice and information. What's getting old is you giving bad advice and then perpetuating denial of said bad advice.CyberBob wrote: I was planning to keep a clown with my GSP. You will prolly need a 55g+, maybe even a 75g+. If you end up keeping your GSP in the 30g tank, I would use live sand, but skip the live rock. Just my personal opinion. If using a sump, you can add live rock there.

Re: New member proud GSP owner :)
sorry for the slow reply. I didn't really explain in detail what I meant to say. What I wanted to say was that yes you need the LR for the full sw tank but to put the amount of LR needed into a 30g tank for a gsp is far from ideal, and to me it would be a better idea to get a bigger tank instead of getting a slump for a 30g tank. Because although a slump would help a gsp in a 30g just getting a bigger tank would be better for the gsp and also the LR would be on display instead of hidden away in the slump.bertie 83 wrote:does the live rock not aid that? if a sump is indeed part of the system the l/r could go in there i could be wrong. i am not disputing what you say puffykid you may know more about l/r than me ( marine and l/r novice) but even in a small s/w tank l/r isbeneficial is it not?

Re: New member proud GSP owner :)
I definitely agree puffykid, it would be a silly to put all the LR hidden away as the puffer would be deprived of all the exploring and pod hunting, which I personally feel is one of the best ways to keep them from getting bored and pacing.

Slump would be a great name, since that's normally what you have to do to get underneath to them.

Re: New member proud GSP owner :)
The use of live rock immediately introduces into the aquarium numerous algae, bacteria and small invertebrates all of which contribute to the overall quality of the aquarium water. Live rock has just as much, if not more, surface area for bacteria than a trickle filter. Since live rock in the aquarium contains various types of bacteria, algae and corals, waste products such as ammonia, nitrate and phosphate can have a number of fates. Ammonia, nitrate and phosphate are readily assimilated by algae and photosynthetic corals growing on and in the rock. Ammonia can also be quickly converted into nitrate by the bacteria on and in the rock. This nitrate can be either absorbed by the algae and corals or it can be denitrified by bacteria in close proximity to the nitrate producing bacteria.
