Porcupine Puffer In LFS

Post by energizerfish »

Not sure if this is the right place to post this...please feel free to correct me if this is misplaced. Anywho, there is a young porcupine puffer in one of the LFS around here that seems to be puffed out every time I go there. Is this a normal thing for porcupine puffers or is something wrong with this puffer/store?

An uncycled tank/poor parameters can cause stress. A stressed-out puffer will puff.

Would it be unreasonable to ask the LFS for a test of their water parameters before buying a puffer from them in this case if the puffer has been there for several months?

Nothing is unreasonable when dealing with the life of an animal, IMO.

They have a young Diodon at the LFS where I live and I've never seen him puff out... Even though the tank is small and there isn't (IMO) sufficient skimming. So I'd wonder, too.
29 Gallon Marine tank, with refugium, skimmer. Base rock, coral skeletons. Stock: Baby Ocellaurus Clown, young Saddled Toby, 3 Hermit crabs, one 2 inch Bristle Worm, hitch hiking starfish.

10g Biotope. 3 C. Travancoricus (Dwarf Puffer) Some Ghost shrimp, gravel/sand substrate, heavily planted with Swords and Java Moss.

10g LR Culture Tank. 10+ pounds fiji LR / base rock. Assorted hitch hiking inverts

Some FW tanks.

In My Experience, Fishkeeping is like Cooking. Five or ten basics will keep anyone from getting sick. But to be truly magnificent... You have to know the right Recipies.

Thank you for all the helpful comments. My friend is moving into a new house and he really likes the diodon. I thought I might help him set up a saltwater tank and once the tank was cycled I would get him a diodon, but I think I will probably just wait.

It would also be a good idea to ask them to feed the puffer in front of you. My LFS had two porcupine puffers in stock when I picked up mine, they had a smaller one which had his tail nipped by another fish and a bigger one that looked perfect. I was surprised to see that the smaller one (the one I felt sorry for) munched on the food right away, while the other bigger puffer on the other tank didn't show any interest at his food.
