Re: I Want To Get Some Figure Eights
Where in the world is this 25g tank coming from? Is it custom made? You say you are ordering the puffer/s online. Have you already ordered them?
You are getting sleepy... you only hear the sound of my voice... you must do water changes... water changes... water changes... water changes...

Not yet, no. I wouldn't just buy them.Pufferpunk wrote:Where in the world is this 25g tank coming from? Is it custom made? You say you are ordering the puffer/s online. Have you already ordered them?
xrayjeeper83, how do you know how supported the base is? And if you're typing in anything that has to be censored, it should make you look stupid
Nuclear_Glitter, I made sure it would support a tank well. Why does everyone think that just because I'm new to this I will automatically fail at everything unless it's explained to me? I'm really, REALLY getting sick of this. Honestly, when I say the dimensions I am going to put the tank on do you think I'm talking about a computer desk?

Re: I Want To Get Some Figure Eights
Sometimes ideas or tank designs come up that peops have not seen they are not trying to treat you like you are stupid, they are curious. I have seen a similar tank in a Lfs and thought it was quite cool ( my wife said no, I was like but, she said no we got enough lol) sometimes responses seem short but not always intended to be harsh, take with a pinch of salt lol. And seven I hate the word sensor it made me look stupid before but I reposted the word 5 times before I realised ha ha ha

Not as such but will nip around eating small scraps of food so will aid maintenance. So yes but no lol

Re: I Want To Get Some Figure Eights
Makes sense (not really). I'm thinking a 29 gal with two f8s, a couple of BBGs, and a lot of fake plants and hide rocks. Also sand as substrate.

Re: I Want To Get Some Figure Eights
To keep stocking levels more in check ( a little space extra above minimum) I personally would have just 2 f8s or 1 f8 with bbg's . I am a believer in understocking so it is easier to maintain not just good, but excellent water quality. Are you going to get a custom tank or have u seen 1 at a Lfs, can't wait to see pics, I wanted a slim tank for a betta and some tetras but was told no by the wife lol

I'm not sure yet. I haven't seen anything that seemed perfect yet.

There it's a site on online that can custom build tanks, prices aren't too outrageous. I don't remember the site name but it should be easy to google.
I was going to get a custom acrylic, but found something on craigslist instead.

Re: I Want To Get Some Figure Eights
Always remember that the minimum sizes stated in the PufferPedia are minimum, period. They apply to the specified fish only, with no other fish sharing that mass of water.
The optimum tank size will always be larger, commonly at least 2x the minimum but sometimes even more than that, and with the same restrictions. Also remember that a 10-year old puffer does not behave like an immature puffer. Many to most puffers become more irritable and hard on tankmates as they age. Also keep in mind that puffers in general are territorial and solitary guardians of as much territory as they can control outside of breeding. Unfortunately we are just beginning to learn about breeding most puffers (DPs are the commonest exception there).
Very few hobbyists are aware that the all-but-standard "mixed" or "community" tank is perhaps the poorest way to keep tropical fish. Fish kept in such set-ups almost never reach their expected ages in captivity due to the chronic stresses of such tanks. Puffers, which in general tend to be more than a bit waspish are much more frequently kept as species specimens - which with proper care allows then to reach their proper size and attain full captive lifespans, which are multiples of the wild lifespan for most individual fish.
The hobby world as it appears to be to the newcomer to the hobby is currently designed and aimed at maximizing the number and kinds of fish crammed into any available volume of water - effectively Noah's Ark tanks or confetti tanks - and that setup style maximizes profits and turnover for the pet hobby industry. The fact that little or few of its practices are anywhere near optimum for any given fish is never considered. It is highly profitable however for the industry. That is what the hobby is, not what it should be. To me a pet fish should live in a setup which maximizes its quality of life and is in the end superior to that in the wild. We have not reached that yet for puffers as we cannot yet breed most of them, but we have and are continuing to learn how to keep them well and for years, and are learning more about breeding them. We will get there, as we have already done for Cichlids and Anabantids.

Re: I Want To Get Some Figure Eights
Rtr you are so precise and logical in you posts these are a great help, not just to aquatic newbies but to all, basically yes allow as much volume for each fish as you can. A lot more than the minimum is a good amount to house a aquatic friend you will also reap the benefits of this as your puffers will be happier and more personable

Re: I Want To Get Some Figure Eights
As long as the full base of the tank is supported then it is fully supported, none of the base should just be hanging off. Also if your going to get a tank that is only 7 and some change wide, I do not believe that is a big enough footprint for any puffer.
Also what I had said wasnt anything negative, just basically stating that I didnt read all the fighting to start with. And even though you do have DP's, due to the size of the space you have to put a tank I still stand by what I said

Since 29 gallons are 12" wide, could he place a solid wood sheet atop the shelf? Would this help support the edges?

Re: I Want To Get Some Figure Eights
Just popping in - took a while to read it all... As for 7's suggestion of topping a shelf with a solid piece of wood, I would think that it would work as long as the board is thick enough to not give at the outer edges at all, or it won't support anything well and would become pointless. Also, having something so heavy atop a shelf, I'd imagine it would be against the wall? If it's a stand, I'd visit the local hardware store and see if you can find some wall braces/brackets to mount your unit to the wall - better safe than sorry. You can also ensure it stays level with the added weight of the tank's contents this way, and not wind up with something that is just going topple and make a mess.
