how to bread ramshorns

Post by blackghostknife »

how do you breed ramshorn snails?
The woods would be very silent if no birds sang there except those that sang the best. Use the talents you possess.

Lil, hahahahahaha!!!

I just put them in a tank with food and let them do their thing!
"I will give you a talisman. Whenever you are in doubt, or when the self becomes too much with you, apply the following test. Recall the face of the poorest and the weakest man whom you may have seen, and ask yourself, if the step you contemplate is going to be of any use to him or her. Will she gain anything by it? Will it restore her to a control over her own life and destiny? In other words, will it lead to freedom for the hungry and spiritually starving millions? Then you will find your doubts and your self melt away."

Lil, thanks for the LOL

To breed them I just toss a bunch in a tank with some food and let nature do the rest

Don't overfeed to encourage breeding. I made that mistake.
HUGE population increase within a week. But, the water got nasty fast.
Rams are prolly one of the easiest to breed. Start with about 20 or so and in a month you should have a few hundred. The biggest problem I have had in the beginning is the PH. If the Ph drops too low, their shells will start disolving. I use cushed coral and baking soda to keep the PH at about 8.0
I've noticed that when it goes below 6.8, they all start dieing off.
I would recommend keeping the snails in a tank by themselves also.
They are a huge bioload. I had no idea how huge until it was out of control.
Because of this, fish will likely get sick if kept with them.
I have successfully kept ghost shrimp and a clown pleco in my snail tank, but I had to greatly increase the filtration to get the water under control. Now I do 80% WC weekly and I am using a penguin 200 on a 10g hehe. But, the water is crystal clear finally. Hope I didn't ramble too much, just tryin to answer the questions I learned the hard way ;)

On a side note ... It might be coincidental, but I have found that when I feed them some zuchini they seem to breed like mad for the next week or so. Just be sure to remove any leftovers or it will quickly cloud the water. I start seeing eggs all over the glass. Usually it's only in the corners, but after a couple days of zuchini, it's all over the place. Just my observation :) They like yellow squash & cucmber also. It won't sink until you blanch it by the way. If you have a decoration treasure chest with a hole or something like that, you don't have to blanch it, put it in the hole ;)

My ramshorn don't seem to be doing anything... I have like 40, with like 5 pond and I have no babies, or even eggs. I'm beginning to think the 2 giant danios and 1 minnow are eating the eggs.

It's definitely better to set up a snail only tank for breeding, apparently the eggs are delicious even when they are not breaded.

the danios would be my suspect
every now & then I'll see eggs in my puffer tank and I get all excited, but a couple hours later the pleco gets em.

keep like species in their own tank... you never know, even with snails, what species will eat another species.
if you follow me, you avoid stepping in the crap that I just did...

Normally, I do. The danios and minnow were thrown on me because someone got too attached and didn't want their turtle to eat them.
