75 Gallon tank Filter advice

Alright finally going to get a refund from a car part I bought that didnt fit which should give me around 200-225 bucks to spend on a filter for my GF's 75.

We have no set plan as to what its going to be stocked with as of yet, but wondering what yalls suggestion would be for a filter/filters for the tank. We are unable to use a HOB due to how close it is to the wall and where it is it cant be pulled away cause it would take up to much room. She has no want for a wet/dry cause of how noisy mine is and the chance of flooding. Ive looked at canisters(big money) and ive looked at the Fluval U4 underwater filters.

And as I type this I just looked at the price of a FX5 and may be able to swing that, but im up for any other suggestions

kinda leaning toward Blue Whale Catfish, and from what ive read they are messy and like high flow

You should get one DP and that's it.

If I got a canister filter, I'd get a SunSun. They're cheap, the models up to 50 gallon tanks are like $40 I think and all the in depth reviews are great. They say they make absolutely no sound. The actual canister part is very cool looking actually.

I have been looking at the sunsun filters I have always used eheim but am gonna buy one of these for a new setup which will be an interesting venture lol

My personal opinion would be an aquaclear if you are wanting a hang on back.
But, if you're gonna stock puffers or other heavy load fish, I'd say a canister of course.
FX5 would certainly be a good choice IMO. SunSun is supposed to be very good also, never used one myself though.

I like the blue whale. but, are you thinking of any tankmates? they like to bite chunks out of fish.

I also agree, 1 DP would be perfect for a 75g. Maybe 3 max

can you stick the HOB on the side of the tank? I have done that to a few of mine.

SunSun canisters are highly regarded. I would get one if I could just to play with it.

DIY canister? I have been playing with that idea for a while but because of my move, I am kind of strapped for time (but not parts).

If you want to try the idea, you should be able to get the housing cheap from any home brew shop. The bonus there is that they are food grade. Cornelius Kegs are perfect for the job and can be obtained for about $30 + a pump, tubing and media.

HOB's are out of the question, it has a very thick glass top that I dont wanna modify it.

I think Im going to go with the Sun Sun.


JP I'd love to DYI canister but I doubt she would trust me to do it right LOL. But I may do it for my own tank. Got any links????

About a week ago I ordered a sunsun(or something like that) 525gph canister filter. Right before I left for work today, I got the filter. All I was able to do was to unpack it, but I can say the thing is HUGE and heavy(19lbs on the shipping label). It came with filter media and a UV light, I have to say the skimped BIG time on the filter media. They gave me about 10 bioballs, a small bag of ceramic rings, a small bag of charcoal(will be removed) and 3-4 pads. I plan on getting more balls and rings. It has 4 trays, plan is one for pads, 1 balls, 1 rings, and they had charcoal in the 4th on but since im not going to use that what should I put in the 4th one?

So far the only problem I have found is the damn thing wont fit through the door of the stand LMAO. So now I have to drain the tank so I can put it in through the rear of the stand lol.

Sounds like you're going to have a monsoon in your tank!
Oh well, you can put a monitor and speakers to play a thunderstorm for your fish and maybe they'll spawn.
