My Goldfish, By Request

You asked for it, PP! I've been keeping fancy goldfish for years, long before being bit by the puffer bug. I'm crazy about ranchus. Here are a couple of my favorites:

This is Fargo, my white ranchu. He's about 6".

What size tank do you keep them in? I had five goldfish that I moved to a 550 gallon swimming pool (filtered and everything still) because I was informed they all got too big for tanks. Yours are very gorgeous.

Depends on the size of tank. I saw a HUGE cube display (had to be around 600g), with 5 giant orandas in there.

Very true. I suppose what I should have said was they get too big for most standard tanks you can find lol.

Single-tailed goldfish (commons, comets and shubunkins) are definitely better suited to be pond fish. Housing them in aquariums requires HUGE tanks. They can grow to be over a foot long and need large swimming areas.

The general guideline for fancy goldfish, like the ones I keep, is 20 gallons for the first goldfish, 10 gallons for each additional. Increasing the number of gallons per fish is often needed when the fish are older (and therefore larger), and more is always better. I have 3 ranchus in a 46 gallon bowfront and do massive (85-90%) water changes weekly. Goldfish are incredibly messy and produce huge amounts of waste. When I first started reading about puffers, I was amused to find that they're very similar in some ways.

My GF is trying to stock a 75g and keeps going back and forth but keeps going to Black Moors, Im thinking that once I get the tank filtered that I might just go and buy her 4-5 Black moors to put in the tank for her as a surprise.
