Gsp's hide when lights come on?

Post by buildmagazine »

Hello new member here, love this site. Lota info.

Anyways my question is I set up a new tank a few months back, water tests perfect. My gsp's hide now everytime the light comes on. I see them out swimming before and after the lights. This new tank has alot of hiding spots the old tank had none. I'm using a agua marine glow and a life glow together for lighting. Any help? I miss these little guys.

Hi and [welcome]
I'm not sure what would be causing this, but a bit more information may help.
Such as specific water parameters, tank size, all inhabitants, and a picture of the full tank would be helpful too.

Went from a 30 gallon they were in for 5 weeks to a 75 gallon acrylic tank. The salinity is at 1.008 and they are 2 1/4" long. There is 3 gsp's in the tank, thats all.

Ph 8.2 ammonia 0 nitrates 0 nitrites 0

I'll upload a photo when I get home.

Hiding when the lights come on is normal. :) They may need some more hiding places (the more hiding places, the less they hide, since they feel like they won't have to go very far if they do need to hide), but if you already have lots of cover or they keep hiding even with new things added, don't worry. Lots of fish do this, especially when they first get moved to a new tank.

Recall the face of the poorest and the weakest man whom you may have seen, and ask yourself, if the step you contemplate is going to be of any use to him or her. Will she gain anything by it? Will it restore her to a control over her own life and destiny? In other words, will it lead to freedom for the hungry and spiritually starving millions? Then you will find your doubts and your self melt away."

Puffers seem to just be picky about somethings. Case in point my gsp Rex seems to prefer night time to day time. In the day he will often have a semi grey belly and stress marks. But in the evening time after the sun sets the stress marks leave and he has a completely white belly. Its really weird..

Animals often feel safer in the dark. puffykid, does your tank have lots of cover?

It's slightly outdated now there is a air stone in the right corner by the skull and a pvc pipe on the left behind the log.
