quarantine tank

My tank is almost ready and i was wondering after putting in all this effort into getting the tank ready would it be a good idea to set up a qt tank for when i get my dp? that way i could check for possible disease before putting it into my tank.

If i did this what would i need to add to the tank? when i had to quarantine my betta fish i had him in a small maybe 2 gallon tank with nothing in as he needed medicating. his qt was floating in his main tank.

i could use the heater from the tank i have, and i have a filtration system i could use. What else? lots of water changes i'm assuming.

You'd have to cycle the QT as well. if it's only one fish going into the tank and if it's a small tank (10 or 20G) I'd just put him in that tank and keep an eye on him in there..JMO

ya if its only 1 or 2 going into a smaller tank then I wouldnt worry about QTing

When I set a new tank for new fish, I do commonly use the permanent tank as the QT as well. But I do a lot of species tanks, where there is only one type of fish to be housed. If any caretakers are to be added, they will not go in until the newcomers are considered clear of any issues.

What happens if you have to medicate newcomers for parasites? Doesn't that kill the tanks cycle?

Anti-parasitics to not kill bacteria.

Nor do antibiotics effective against gram-positive bugs affect the tank's biofilter. The nitrogen cycle bacteria are gram-negative.

Because I have advanced MTS and always multifilter, spare conditioned filters are seldom an issues for me in any case.

Most issues in QT tend to be parasitic, either ectoparasites or IPs.
