Show Guppy's
I am trying to develop my own breed of show guppy. Any one have good advice, or a link to a GOOD site on guppy's preferred tank conditions?

Pretty much or just are moved to different tank so my "show" guppy's have the best genes possible.chuckfriedrice wrote:So the ugly guppies get the boot! LOL

Most livebearers in the trade now are seriously over-bred and rather weak constitutionally. It should be possible to restore some vigor to these fish via back-crossing with freshly imported materials from the wild, but these have all but vanished from the trade.

I breed fancy cobra guppies. Right now I am posting on my droid and I hate posting with a phone? But I will get on tomorrow and share some tips. Or you can pm me if I forget, which I might lol
29 Gallon Marine tank, with refugium, skimmer. Base rock, coral skeletons. Stock: Baby Ocellaurus Clown, young Saddled Toby, 3 Hermit crabs,one 2 inch Bristle Worm, hitch hiking starfish.
10g Biotope. 3 C. Travancoricus (Dwarf Puffer) Some Ghost shrimp, gravel/sand substrate, heavily planted with Swords and Java Moss.
10g LR Culture Tank. 10+ pounds fiji LR / base rock. Assorted hitch hiking inverts
Some FW tanks.
In My Experience, Fishkeeping is like Cooking. Five or ten basics will keep anyone from getting sick. But to be truly magnificent... You have to know the right Recipies.
10g Biotope. 3 C. Travancoricus (Dwarf Puffer) Some Ghost shrimp, gravel/sand substrate, heavily planted with Swords and Java Moss.
10g LR Culture Tank. 10+ pounds fiji LR / base rock. Assorted hitch hiking inverts
Some FW tanks.

Another point worth noting: mosquito fish are basically ruggedly built guppies. They lack the cobra, endlers livebearer etc genes that crop up in most modern fancy guppy stock. In the town where I live, the city water authority breeds them for some purpose or other and will give them to you if you have a pond. Only problem for me is that my pond temp is pretty low, that and they will only give you 500 fish at a time. But the point of this post is to illustrate that there ARE mosquito fish out there. Local zoos might also have a breeding stock, mine does. If you do an outcross with female mosquito fish and male fancies, cobras, or endlers, the offspring would be a lot tougher but not as fancy to look at. Do at least 2 pairs and cross the resulting fry. Then you can start trying to lock down traits and you'll know your starting off with hardier stock than average. Hope that helps
