Puffer nip

Post by energizerfish »

Just a funny story, but my puffer is finally starting to interact with me and my roommate. Today I was letting my puffer follow my finger in the water, being sure to pull out my finger before he lunged for it, which has become somewhat of a feeding ritual for us. I enjoy interacting with my puffer and he enjoys the hunt before being given frozen food. My roommate did not believe me and asked me if he could put his finger in the water and see if the puffer would bite it. Sure enough, the puffer saw his finger tip looking suspiciously like food and took a nip at it. He says he'll never put his hand near that water again. LOL. Does anyone else have similar stories of people accidentally or deliberately being nipped by their puffer?

All of ours bite. Doesn't hurt too much as they're small unless they get your cuticle, then it's a little surprising ;) This is why we always only feed with tongs.
It is absurd to talk of one animal being higher than another. We consider those, when the cerebral structure/intellectual faculties most developed, as highest. A bee doubtless would when the instincts were.

Balki's ex-roommate, Pig Pig, would bite my knuckles anytime I had to do maintenance on his tank. He was small and it still hurt. He was so mean, and he always looked pissed off.

Watching your puffer do this might be somewhat funny at the time but..... As they grow bigger so do those teeth, not alot of fun dodging them during water changes. Good to get him/her out of this habit before it starts.

Whenever I do water changes or tank maintenance, I'm careful to watch my fish and do my best to keep my fingers out of the water. He does pretty well with tank maintenance.
