On a bad note my walmart has got their new tanks up and running and threw fish in them right away...I'm sure they were not cycled. The gsp's they have look worse than ever...completely black. The new tanks are much smaller and they are keeping the gsp's housed with parrot ciclids. I wish there was something I could do...but don't we all
yeah too bad fish arent included with animal abuse laws. they definately get abused. glad your gsps are doing fine!
Im visiting my new in-laws in New York and we went to the local Wal-mart. They had a very small fish section, probably about 10 tanks? Tucked in the back of the store behind the pet food. The tanks are less than 8 inches square, looked to be about 2 gal. a piece. They had 5 or so GSPs in one tank, in freshwater, and the label said they eat tropical flake food. Most of the GSPs were already 1 1/2" to 2" long, and it was obvious they were starving to death. At least one of the puffers was lying on the bottom of the tank entirely black in coloration with all its fins nipped off. One was swimming desperately at the front, begging, with its belly so concave it broke my heart to look at it, since the puffer was grown the size of our F8s at home. They also had african cichlids, which looked unwell at the least, Oscars, fancy-tailed guppies (which must have been new stock because they looked okay, nice colors, but Id never buy one) mostly it was the condition of the puffers that absolutely sickened me. My hubby and I frowned at the tanks, Id never been to a Wal-mart with fish before. My hubbys sister has a saltwater tank, and we talked to them about the fish at the store afterwards and they agreed, Wal-mart is not a pet store and the only reason they have fish is to make more profit off of the ignorance of potential amateur fish-owners.
