converting my 20g into brackish for a f8!! excited! QUESTION

Post by hadla »

so I traded in 3 dps and some shrimp for a figure 8 (still at the store) and 2 bbgs... my main question is: how fast can I move the bbgs into 1.008 (the figure 8s salinity) so I can get my figure 8 asap? I wanted the bbgs to be in the tank first so hopefully the figure 8(already named it Figgy XD) wouldn't care about them and also because they're in freshwater and I have to convert them anyway. I say how fast because they're not supposed to sell fish and hold them for a long time... if I can't get them into 1.008 in like 3 or 4 days, I'll just leave them in fresh and bring them back when I pick up Figgy...

my best idea was: can I start a drip line of really salty water to constantly drip into the 20g? (I'm using Instant Ocean since I still have the box of it from Kirby)

So you have the gobies in a cycled fresh water tank now?

If so do a water change and bring the tank up to SG1.002 and both species could be placed into that, I'd suggest that you keep your tank between SG1.003-1.005 and that Sg1.008 is unnecessary. Both fish can be found in freshwater in the wild but do better in low brackish conditions in captivity.

yes, my 20 gallon has been running for a few years now... I was only raising it that high since the figure 8 is in 1.008 right now at the store... and I don't want to stress him out when I bring him home to my tank...

thanks for replying! i've been waiting since I posted this XD

edit: oh, and the sg of the 20g is now at about 1.004 since I added the instant ocean water I mixed last night. I added it earlier this morning.

You went from fresh to .004 in 1 day? Watch your water parameters you may have a slight crash. From what everyone says here is only go .002 a week

i did a 25% water change about 2 hours ago and refilled with fresh water so my sg is now 1.002 and my readings are pH: about 7.4, ammonia: 0.25, nitrite: 0, and nitrate: about 5

so should I still raise the salinity to be closer to 1.008? Or can I put the figure 8 into a lower salinity (like 1.005 or so)?

1.005 is what you want for a Figure 8. Don't go any higher.

ok, thanks, but no one has answered my real question! even though he is in 1.008 right now at the store, i can move him into my tank which will be 1.005 with no problems, right?

Drip-acclimate him within an hour, he'll be fine.
