UH HUH, TTX cannot be broken down with heat or cooking. To be honest its not worth the risk of even the slightly contamination its 1000s more potent than cyanide and dont take much TTX to kill ya. Since this board has been up, we have found there are several questions that routinely get asked in order to help diagnose problems. If you can have that information to begin with in your post, we'll be able to help right away (if we can!) without having to wait for you to post the info we need.
1) Your water parameters - pH, Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrates and salinity (if appropriate). This is by far the most important information you can provide! Do not answer this with "Fine" "Perfect" "ok", that tells us nothing. We need hard numbers.
2) Tank size and a list of ALL inhabitants. Include algae eaters, plecos, everything. We need to know what you have and how big the tank is.
3) Feeding, water change schedule and a list of all products you are using or have added to the tank (examples: Cycle, Amquel, salt, etc)
4) What changes you've made in the tank in the last week or so. Sometimes its the little things that make all the difference.
5) How long the aquarium has been set up, and how did you cycle it? If you don't know what cycling is read this: Fishless Cycling Article and familiarize yourself with all the information. Yes. All of it.
We want to help, and providing this information will go a LONG way to getting a diagnosis and hopeful cure that much faster.
While you wait for assistance:
One of the easiest and best ways to help your fish feel better is clean water! If you are already on a regular water change schedule (50% weekly is recommended) a good step to making your fish more comfortable while waiting for diagnosis/suggestions is to do a large water change immediately. Feel free to repeat daily or as often as you can, clean water is always a good thing! Use of Amquel or Prime as a dechlor may help with any ammonia or nitrite issues, and is highly recommended.
Note - if you do not normally do large water changes, doing a sudden, large water change could shock your fish by suddenly changing their established water chemistry. Clean water is still your first goal, so in this case, do several smaller (10%) water changes over the next day or two before starting any large ones.

Personally, I wouldn't worry. Many puffers aren't even toxic and it is known that they lose a lot of their toxicity in captivity. Just don't go licking everything that touched it. Plus, I believe that FW puffers are not prone to the toxicity that SW ones are.
It is absurd to talk of one animal being higher than another. We consider those, when the cerebral structure/intellectual faculties most developed, as highest. A bee doubtless would when the instincts were.

Pufferfish actually acquire the ability to produce these toxins from the food they eat, As it is certain types of bacteria that live in the Gut of a Pufferfish which produce the Tetrodotoxin and thus make puffers poisonous. A puffer that is not toxic acquires the bacteria which produce these toxins from the food it eats like Crustaceans etc. Once consumed the Bacteria multiply in the Puffers Organs and thus begin producing TTX and hence the puffer becomes poisonous. These same bacteria are found in the Salivary Glands of the Blue Ringed Octopus which actually use the puffer poison to paralyse and kill any prey it bites. So in theory if you had a FW puffer that was not poisonous and you fed it foods like clams, cockles or crab etc that contained the TTX Bacteria, your puffer could become poisonous with no harm to himself

It has not been proven that it is used for defense. That's something that would be extremely hard to prove though so I don't see much research happening on it one way or another anywhere in the near future.

Let me reiterate I dont think the presence of TTX in puffers is really a defense mech. as I think its really a consequence of their diet that they accumulate such bacteria and thus toxins. A few less well known species who predate on similar food stuffs that puffers do also accumulate the same bacteria and thus TTX in their bodies but to a lesser extent. There are a lot of "citations needed" in that doc.
There is also another MAJOR difference. The shell foods we feed out puffers are cultured and tested for human compatibility. That is one main reason why they loose their toxicity in an aquarium environment.

Well, it's not like I use my pocket knife to cut my butter everyday or my aquarium gloves to eat my bacon everyday. I could hypothetically keep them. I, too, read that puffers acquire TTX.. Rather than permanently being born with it.
It's not like a really big deal, I was just standing at the garbage can with my $50 Gerber wondering if this is really needed.
Do I want to die someday in 10 hours of my puffer's toxin? No, absolutely not. That, enough, will make me throw it away.

To give you some idea of the Stability of TTX, if you have pufferfish meat contaminated with TTX no amount of cooking will degrade the TTX Molecule's chemical structure. Hence why in japan you need to train for 7 years before your allowed to prepare Fugu Sushi for human consumption and thats not even cooked, otherwise every Fugu house would be cooking up Fugu to get rid of the poison. But you cant so its illegal to serve Fugu unless you have the license to prepare it.
It is possible you could degrade the TTX, if for e.g. you heated your knife with a blow torch to a temp of 300 C + but dont quote me on that as I dont know the stability of TTX at temperatures above those used in cooking!
TTX does not have a Halflife

You could investigate the chemical properties of this Reagent to determine just how you can degrade TTX.
