New 535 Gal Freshwater Puffer Fish Tank / Need Advice

Post by Perchmonger »

I have a 535gal Planted Discus community tank; but switching to a freshwater Puffer planted tank; most of the 50 previous inhabitants have been relocated. Now I need to know what kind of puffers you would put in it and how many. I know puffers are Il-tempered and like to be alone, but what if any tankmates would you also put in there. I was thinking maybe 2 or 3 Tetraodon lineatus "Fahaka Puffer or many more of the smaller puffer like the, Colomesus Asellus Peruvian Puffer; possibly 10 or 12 of them. I'm anxious to get started and I have started draining the tank and doing an 80% water change and my 75gal sump has 3 Gen-X PCX150 2250 GPH External Water Pumps ready to push this beast. Need suggestions! Tank Dimensions are 8Ft Long x 4FT Tall x 3FT wide Video of the previous Occupants 1) http://www.youtube.c...h?v=pULK2sUBdLs 2) http://www.youtube.c...h?v=_CIxvlESHzwThanks George

So you got rid of all those fish without plans of what puffer you wanted in there?

Thats quite a big tank your planning to put just one puffer in there would seem a bit overkill I thinks even for just one Mbu but thats just me :D

I think not, considering most folks here consider a 1000g tank for a mbu. Better go read that article by RTR I was referring to in that previous PM. ;)

To the OP, look over out Pufferpedia (under the Learn tab, above) for ideas.

I'd almost be interested in making it a heavily planted SAP tank. I think that if you bought a large number as juveniles (30ish perhaps) and kept them in a tank that large it could be very neat. You could keep some other fish in there with them too as maintenance workers which is unlikely with something like a fahaka.

I agree that it's too small for an mbu as well. They're big fish, it just wouldn't be fair.
It is absurd to talk of one animal being higher than another. We consider those, when the cerebral structure/intellectual faculties most developed, as highest. A bee doubtless would when the instincts were.

You think 20 or so SAP would work and I have even more plants going in. Very interesting! What other tankmates then?

200 DP's!!!!!! LOL

I like Flutters idea, a HUGE school of SAPs

Problem with that size tank is that its a huge tank for a fahaka(though Im sure one would love that much room) and to small for a mbu. And HUGE for just about every other puffer.

What about going SW with the tank?

I was thinking SW too. I see lots of SW tanks that big & bigger.

Problem with all those SAPs, is you'd have catch each one every 4 months for teeth trimming.
