Using an External Filter on a sw tank, do i need a skimmer?

Post by Arny »

Hello Guys

I'm using an External Filter on a sw tank. It contains, wool/floss and crushed Live Rock and Bio media. The tank has been started using ''DrTim's One and Only''.

Do i need a skimmer or will the external filter get rid of all the scum that a Protein Skiimer would?

Thanks
Blaine

A filter will not remove protein from the water. External filters can be used but they must be cleaned often. The debris that is caught in the floss will produce Nitrates very quickly.

A skimmer is highly recommended.

Do you think I'd be better off selling the External filter and putting the money towards a Protein skimmer?

The LR is just as effective in tank with sufficient flow. Better served with a good protein skimmer. Much better if you can add an overflow box with sump to the tank. Then the skimmer, etc can go in the sump+ you get more water volume.

Definitely go skimmer, spend the cash and get a descent one also. The external will be a nitrate factory in a hurry.
