what kind of gravel should i use?

i recently bought a fahaka from someone, and i dunno what type of gravel should i use, currently there is no any gravel, im planning to use some white sand since if i use black sand the fahaka will be too dark which i want it to have brighter color. and i dunno why the fahaka i bought, the end of its tail is colorless, just transparent, but the other part is yellow. what can i do with that? also the fahaka over weights a lot, how can i help him to get skinnier? he's 8" eats 1 tiger shrimp everyday after i bought it. very active fish

Any substrate is fine, as long as it's rinsed well.

Filbert loves his disco gravel:

It's about 40% black sand.

what about the tail problem and how to lose weight?

He needs more variety in is diet..and is his tank big enough for him to get exercise in?

Do you have a picture of the tail. Could me just his natural coloration "for now".

He's size is 8" and currently in a 50 gallon tank 3' x 18"x 18" he swims around all over the tank I have had him for only a few days. What should I feed him to bring his colour back?? I'll upload a pic by tonight

Soak his food in a good liquid fish vitamin. Only feed him every 3 days & vary his diet more: library/feeding/feeding-your-puffers/

Hi.
Im using sandblasting sand and my puffer just love to burrow down in it

.
It's basically fine grinded sand ment for sandblasting cabinets, but it works really fine in the tank and it looks good too.
