If you are going to breed cherries on a smaller level, it is a good idea to introduce new stock every 3rd to 5th generation. It will help keep the population healthy and keep up the breeding rates.

Oh Chris, I hear you! Not to add to the thread hijack here, but a moment of empathy--I definitely understand the trials and challenges of making sure we don't take on too much. I take care of the water changes on my 40gal planted and our 75gal puffer tank every Saturday afternoon. That is definitely all I can handle. HE does all the changes on the snail tank because he's taken such a liking to Bubba and enjoys cultivating some plants in there. It went from a bare-bottom snail tank with a moss ball (my choice for ease of maintenance) . . .to gravel (his choice, because it's in our living room and he said it's ugly) . . .then a log . . . now a whole little forest and an accidental shrimp. Any additional shrimp tank is still in the "we'll discuss it and see" phase. Although we don't have any children obligations yet, I'm in law school and my life is nutso. Our lil sweetie GSPs were intended for the 5gal tank as a replacement for our betta fish who passed away. (That's how we got the 75gal. and the accompanying snail farm.) The tanks must be kept under control!

Yeah I got a 5 gal. feeder tank that needs to be takin down and put away so that will be another gone. But dont get me wrong, if I had the extra room, money, and everything else well taking care of, I would do muti tanks again. Well alot more then now anyways..lol.

My post was suppose to say snail tank, not snail tail! I put some baby cherries in with my SAPS lady night and they didn't even last 30 seconds. Looks like I'm gonna get a small tank for cherries now. I'm also gonna tear down my snail tank and start over bare bottom

i'm glad your SAPs enjoyed their scampi treat

you'll like the cherries, they're easy to keep and then you can know your SAPs are getting your choice of algae wafers, blood worms, etc. in the shrimp stomachs and that the shrimp weren't farmed with exposure to pollution and such.

I bought a small tank to move the snails to. I put my male cherry in the SAP tank the other night because the SAP's don't mess with the ghosts in their tank. Think that was a bad choice..haven't seen my male since...don't even ask why I done it...I don't know either! I'll be making a trip Austin this weekend,I'll get some more cherries then.

All I want to know is where you people find room, time, and does the better half is ok with all these tanks? I know I dont have the room, time, nor does my wife even want another tank set-up and might even have to cut back again. I wish I had ways like most of you...lol. I know back in the older days I had or found ways for muti tanks but now with all the high bills piling up, 3 small children, sick wife, and you name it. I know I should had made a new topic but with these breeding tanks for everything is the reason I ask. Sorry about the rambling.

Sorry about your situation. That must be frustrating. My fiance was the one who wanted fish, but sometimes Im sure he thinks Im much more attached to all of them... all of our four tanks... which we have to keep seperate because of the types of fish we have. And I do have an extra tank for breeding (it was supposed to be snails only, but I needed somewhere to stash baby guppies). I also have one ghost shrimp in there, out of a dozen only that one survived. Its rather upsetting because they were supposed to be treats for the puffers. But hes cute, like a pet now, no name though. He helps keep the breeder tank clean. Im debating getting more ghost shrimp and see if theyll breed, or find some cherry shrimp. I really like the cherries... only I cant find any!!! Argh.

Does anyone know anything about 'rainbow' shrimp? They had those at a pet store near the ghost shrimp. Looked about the same, more colorful though.

My pond snails are the most prolific breeders. Ive been rooting out the MTS and Ramshorns and putting them in the platy tank. I have lots of mid-sized snails now, and I feel guilty feeding them off to the puffers, because Id like some of them to get really big and be my typical 'breeder' snails that I leave alone... that way I dont run into having no snails left again.

oops! just re-read and saw that you did pick cherries. sorry for missing it. i say throw in some ghost shrimp too (it's hard to know what species you've been sold, as we've seen here before @ srkoe) and just observe if they breed, grow into monsters, or whatever
