40g. tank for my GSP (what equipment?)

Post by greenspottedlover »

As Pufferpunk suggested, I plan on getting a AquaClear filter. I was wondering what size AquaClear to get for a 40g. tank with a single GSP in it. I was thinking of getting the 70(filters up to 70g.s) Would this be big enough or should I spend some more and get the 110 model? I think I know what I'm getting for a skimmer now, but any suggestions on skimmers would still give me help also.

Go BIG! I've used the 110 on a 20g. It'll make for great flow & you can put live rock rubble in there, when you go SW. I use a Backpac skimmer for my 40 & 46g..

Thanks again :)

I think I will go big as this will be my GSP permanent home. What models of skimmers would be good for this size tank?

Also what brand of heater? All I have good experience with is Marineland heaters. Are there better brands?

I generally go with the Jager brand. You have a while before you need a skimmer.

Hey what about this. I saw it at a LFS and was curious so I did a search.

I have only used one skimmer since I am new to SW...I picked up a Tunze DOC Skimmer. They are pump driven, compact, absolutely silent, and very user friendly. It can be used in tank or in sump. The in-tank part of the skimmer is only approximately 10"x5"x3"

I definetly recommend the brand.

I aslo agree in regards to the Aquaclear. Bigger is better.

Dont skimp on a heater , get a good one. Also are you going to have a sump? I think with SW a sump is a huge benefit in many ways. You will have some great small in sump skimmer options. Aquamaxx HOB-1 is a great HOB but is $$. Remora,Tunze are also decent options.

As for the heater when you say "don't skimp" are you referring to the watts? I'm not sure if I want a sump. Don't you have to make holes in the tank for that?

You can have a sump with an overflow box on the back...no need for drilling.

I don't trust overflows.

I used to really distrust overflows to ...concerns over flooding and such...until I saw one in practice at a friends place. The over flow was kept just below the water line and a siphon carried to water from the overflow box(in tank) down to the sump and there was a siphon break cut into the return line to prevent backflow. Very smart design, completely silent, very effective.

Yah I didn't want one because if water gets on my floor then my parents would kill me, and if I asked my dad if I could drill holes in my tank I KNOW he would NEVER let me. So maybe once I move out. A overflow is a possible, though from my experience if PP doesn't think it's a good idea, THEN DO NOT ATTEMPT!
