Filter overkill?

My 64 litre (15 gal) tank currently has a 500litre a hour filter in it, I have the chance to get a free fluvel u2(400l a hour) or a fluvel u3(600l a hour) Would adding either of these be overkill in my tank? I mean I'll still get the filter cause its a free filter, but i wondered if it'd be too much for my puffer tank.

IMO there is really no such thing as too much filtration,...however you need to consider the capabilities of your fish and the effect of the overall flow in the tank.

On my ABN pleco tank (20 gal) I have an Aquaclear 70 and a Fluval 305 but they thrive in the high flow tank.

On my brackish 20 gal for my F8, Dragon goby, and BB Gobys I have an Aquaclear 70 and a Fluval 205...because the gobys and the puffer do not appreciate any higher flow.

Just make sure that the tenants aren't being blown around or having to constantly swim to stay in place.

Given neither the tenants nor the filter are in the tank at the moment I dont know how they will fair in the water, or the current speeds the combined filters will produce.
This is why I thought I'd come and ask here first.

In the tank i'm planning on housing, a couple, maybe 3 dwarf puffers, a trio of oto's and possibly a few shrimp if they dont get eaten.

Well,...dwarf puffers are fairly slow movers so alot of flow is not recommended.

I'll try to get the free filter, may try it in there see if its too much for the little guys, even if it is, it cant hurt to have a spare back up filter anyway.

I confess to having back-ups for almost everything. It is a lifestyle. I will never argue with idea, as I adopted it decades ago and am quite comfortable with it. Which is why I have so many of the same brand and sizes of filters and pumps and tanks and lights.

Most of my tanks have non-trivial current, but it does need some care and thought and observation to be sure it is suited to the particular fish involved. Too much current can exhaust a fish, which is not at all a good thing.
