CAn I breed snails?

Post by trever22 »

can I breed snails in a 1/4 gallon jar. I saw a video on youtube and the guy have either a figure eight or a GSP and he put snails in a jar to breed. So since I wouldnt need many could I put like 6 in a jar and wait for them to breed so I can feed my puffer?

Thanks,
Trever

do they really make that much of a mess to need a filter?

And also if I dont have access to anything else could I use the jar?

the filter is necessary to keep the water clean. very difficult to keep a healthy colony going in a jar for any period of time

They are DIRTY!!!!! I have mine in a 5 gallon with a filter and the substrate is a mess!!! Last time I cleaned it I know I lost hundreds of snails. Any tips on how to clean substrate? I really just want bare bottom but that's next to impossible with the colony I have now! Snails are like gold in my house, with 11, soon to be 12 puffers...lol!!!

I find it best to use a thin sand substrate (1/2 inch) and high flow to keep the tank clean

I use a fine mesh bag over my intake. I learned the hard way. I woke up to about 3 gallons of water all over my dresser and carpet one morning. I took the filter apart to find that 2 snails were jammed in the impeller and which caused my filter to fill too high with water and overflow.

I strongly agree that a jar, or even a battery of jars, is a lot more work and less productive than any tank. Snail tanks are easy - they are just another aquarium, which many folks over-stock, over-feed, and under-maintain. Think of it as another tank and feed and maintain in proportion.
