You see, from a guy that has a long time wife/slave driver/accountant/bookkeeper, the best way to happiness and Zen is to get her interested in the hobby. I bought a GSP for my bedroom and she fell in love with it's personality. Like any pet once she started to feed it, she had to keep it. Start small and cute, win her over, and then go bigger. Never forget what comes first in a relationship. Always prioritize and alphabetize. A=aquarium, B=biofilter, C=cleaning crew ...W=wife (just kidding). One thing that helps me was when I buy a tank I include her in the planning and I also try to make it as unobtrusive as possible. I always rebuild stands to match woodwork or to her liking, takes some time but it is really fun and more rewarding.
If that doesn't work, I have cat like reflexes and can duck well and I live in the middle of nowhere, have great hiding places and I know how to live off the land....

My wife wants nothing to do with my hobbies (fish & cars) and I have no interest in hers (knitting, etc.). She spends at least what what I do on her hobbies, if not more, so the money issue isn't there. She has been spending more time looking into the marine tank I just started though.

Just remember, you can't always cuddle a wife but you can always cuttle a fish!

Re: Excuses to keep your spouse from killing you.
my fiance and I have done this. Yes, theres no voice of reason. I talked him out of getting a 45 gal. tank w/stand, and we compromised on a 20 gal. for my fish... just to have us go out again later, get a 45 gal. with stand (at least it was cheaper) anyway. So... our planned three tanks went to four. I still remember when we discussed not even having enough room for two tanks in our 1 bedroom apartment. We are waiting for the office to leave a notice any day now... too many fishtanks... hehehe. I manage to talk him down on the price, only to preserve his sanity. Its not like Im not into the hobby too. I love his cichlids, the puffers, and my platys and guppies. Even my snails and shrimp.. man, Im into critters.puffermichigan wrote:The trouble with having your spouse/significant other as much into your fish as you are: there is no voice of reason when you're at the LFS deciding to get yet another tankful of fish!!! Be careful what you wish for . . .
We seriously had to go sit in the car for 15 minutes and rationally discuss why it might not be the best time for us to add a 20 gallon and two adorable little dwarf puffers to our household. It was crazy--we were picking out sand and plants and possible names before it occurred to us that now might not be the best time (we're finishing grad school, planning a wedding) for us to take on another tank. We went home fishless. It was the right call, but we almost didn't make it, lol.

I got my SO into this and now I have to be the voice of reason
Last time I failed we got a F8 who very quickly turned into our favourite fish
It is absurd to talk of one animal being higher than another. We consider those, when the cerebral structure/intellectual faculties most developed, as highest. A bee doubtless would when the instincts were.

Heh! The LFS I go to has these in their tanks. They also have some very realistic looking fakes in the "serious" tanks that I had to take a second look at.

Problem I've already seen with them is they get coated with algae/diatoms pretty easily & have to be cleaned often.

Hey John, try doing some knitting with her. That might help you stay out of the dog house when you go buy more fish, tanks, and ect
