TPF appreciation: How has The Puffer Forum helped you?

Post by sevenyearnight »

I'm not sure if there is already a thread for this, but I wanted to hear stories about how this forum has helped you and your puffers.
I'm on my android, as I am 99% of the time, so I'll tell my story when I am at an actual keyboard. But I will say that I have two very much alive and healthy puffers thanks to the information provided here. :D

Hands down this site is God when it comes to puffers. GOD!
There are many knowledgeable fish keepers on this forum willing to help and give great advice...The advice is free; What you choose to do with it gives it value.

Without the puffer forum, I would have gone on the advice given to me in 1998, the first time I kept puffers. The LFS in Salem, OR were fantastic, and I felt like they genuinely gave me the best advice that they had available to them at that time. There was no puffer forum, and I don't think I even had a computer at that time, let alone the internet, so on their advice, I had 2 green spotted puffers and a figure 8 in a 30 gallon light brackish tank. They ate krill, brine shrimp, blood worms, and pond snails. Fortunately, they were all very small, and I miraculously had no issues with them, but I only had them for about 6 months before taking them back to the store; I was moving out of state.
I didn't even know that GSP had to be in marine as they got older, and could be adapted as babies. So without the advice given here, I would have 2 GSP in a 37 gallon brackish tank indefinitely, with a very bland insufficient diet. But instead I have 1 in a 37 FOWLR, and the other in a 29 FOWLR, no issues with water parameters, they get to eat all kinds of things I would never buy at the grocery store, (I'm a vegetarian) and they appear to be very happy little puffers. (They're smiling, so they must be happy right? jk!) Good colors, good appetite, very active, and insanely cute.

If It weren't for the puffer forum, I fear what my GSP tank would be like. :flush:
