I have 2 Fig 8 puffers in a 160L tank. They are currently in a SG of 1.005. I am moving house next week and am considering marine. I have a spare tank to play around with so I have margins. I have read many conflicting opinions on F8s on the net though, with some saying full marine would be Ok for Fig 8s. They are both around 6 years old now and I do not want to stress them in anyway.
I'm basically toying with the idea of being able to choose a full marine tankmate for them. I don't think I know enough yet to sustain live rock etc etc.
I think this site is the leading authority on puffers and I would value your opinions.

Good for asking however full marine is not suitable for F8s. If you're set on getting tankmates you could look at bumble bee gobies.
It is absurd to talk of one animal being higher than another. We consider those, when the cerebral structure/intellectual faculties most developed, as highest. A bee doubtless would when the instincts were.

Might as well save your $$$ on $alt & keep them in the best parameters, 1.005.

Densities above 1.010 will shorten the F-8s lives. I did not test between 1.005 and 1.010, so have no data of exactly where the break point occurs, if any. It is likely to be gradual in any case.
The densities we use for F-8s are pragmatic - they give the longest lives and the healthiest fish. The 1.003 and 1.005 levels give comparable results, but only if the alkalinity of the 1.003 specific gravity has boosted KH/alkalinity.
