Performing Anesthesia On Your Fish!

Since this board has been up, we have found there are several questions that routinely get asked in order to help diagnose problems. If you can have that information to begin with in your post, we'll be able to help right away (if we can!) without having to wait for you to post the info we need.
1) Your water parameters - pH, Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrates and salinity (if appropriate). This is by far the most important information you can provide! Do not answer this with "Fine" "Perfect" "ok", that tells us nothing. We need hard numbers.
2) Tank size and a list of ALL inhabitants. Include algae eaters, plecos, everything. We need to know what you have and how big the tank is.
3) Feeding, water change schedule and a list of all products you are using or have added to the tank (examples: Cycle, Amquel, salt, etc)
4) What changes you've made in the tank in the last week or so. Sometimes its the little things that make all the difference.
5) How long the aquarium has been set up, and how did you cycle it? If you don't know what cycling is read this: Fishless Cycling Article and familiarize yourself with all the information. Yes. All of it.
We want to help, and providing this information will go a LONG way to getting a diagnosis and hopeful cure that much faster.
While you wait for assistance:
One of the easiest and best ways to help your fish feel better is clean water! If you are already on a regular water change schedule (50% weekly is recommended) a good step to making your fish more comfortable while waiting for diagnosis/suggestions is to do a large water change immediately. Feel free to repeat daily or as often as you can, clean water is always a good thing! Use of Amquel or Prime as a dechlor may help with any ammonia or nitrite issues, and is highly recommended.
Note - if you do not normally do large water changes, doing a sudden, large water change could shock your fish by suddenly changing their established water chemistry. Clean water is still your first goal, so in this case, do several smaller (10%) water changes over the next day or two before starting any large ones.

Performing Anesthesia On Your Fish!
so, the other day i was looking up ways to trim my GSPs beak... i found this one page where a guy did it
and ive been scared about attempting/experimenting with this since a meeting i had with doc johnson... and now that i feel i need to perform this on m puff, i looked more into it
watchu need to do is:
take 2 buckets
pour 4.5 cups of tank water in both
in one of the 2 buckets ad 4 drops of clove oil
**ONLY 4 DROPS**
i use clove oil at work to put koi fish and other pond fish down that are sick and cannot be cured, so it can be lethal (hense iwhy i was afraid to attempt this)
take your fish out of the tank and put him in the clove oil bucket
and in a couple minutes the fish will appear asleep, you will be able to poke it and it will roll over as if it were a log...
*** this is when i would trim the beak ***
after you do whatever you need to do and want the fish to wake back up, simply put it in the other bucket of only tank water
and in a few minutes it should wake back up
if it didnt, there was probably a measurement issue
4.5 cups of water ----> 4 drops of clove oil
i just tested this out today at work with a comet and it worked wonderfully
if you try this, be very cautious and ake sure you measure right
=)

No Finquel available? It is supposed to be MUCH safer than clove oil.
if you follow me, you avoid stepping in the crap that I just did...

Yep, I'd just use MS-222. Doesn't make sense to use clove oil and MS-222 is easily available in the States. Not so much in Canada but it's not impossible.
It is absurd to talk of one animal being higher than another. We consider those, when the cerebral structure/intellectual faculties most developed, as highest. A bee doubtless would when the instincts were.

Re: Performing Anesthesia On Your Fish!
I suggest trying to find Finquel or something similar....they are geared towards fish and the medication and dosing is measureable.
The problem with clove oil is that how much you use depends on the size of the fish and how much water you are putting it into for treatment.
I have used clove oil myself because it is next to impossible to get proper sedatives here (Winnipeg, Canada)
I suggest 3 buckets plus a plastic container for scooping up the puffer
One bucket for sedation...second for work....third for complete rinse (some clove oil can be transferred to 2'nd container)...then transfer back to tank.
I used less water in my sedation bucket and only 1 drop of clove oil....then waited for approximately 90 seconds until fish stopped moving....transferred immediately to 2'nd bucket, held puffer submerged in the water (in a net for handling) and trimmed teeth,...then transferred to 3'rd bucket for final rinse.
Best to use cuticle nippers for trimming IMO.

Yeah, we all were using CO at 1st, until we found it stops the fish from breathing. Many of our puffers that had been tranqued over & over for trimming were starting to come up with brain damage, so we only suggest using this in an emergency or where MS-222 isn't available.
You are getting sleepy... you only hear the sound of my voice... you must do water changes... water changes... water changes... water changes...
